3 key gardening industry trends to embrace for 2024

The gardening industry is increasingly focused on sustainable practices, with a growing number of individuals seeking ways to make their backyards eco-friendly. This shift is driven by a heightened awareness of climate change and extreme weather conditions, prompting gardeners to adopt methods that mitigate issues like flooding and drought while fostering healthy ecosystems. The Slow Flowers Society's annual trends forecast report, based on insights from growers and floral designers across the US, highlights three key industry trends that are adaptable for personal backyards and various climate zones: native planting, cultivating fragrant, seasonal flowers, and utilizing homemade, low-cost gardening solutions. These trends not only address environmental challenges but also offer practical and aesthetic benefits. Native planting is gaining significant traction, with 87% of Slow Flowers members incorporating native species into their crops. Debra Prinzing, founder of the Slow Flowers Society and author of 'Slow Flowers,' emphasizes that valuing indigenous flora benefits wildlife, improves soil health, and contributes to climate change mitigation. Native plants are more resilient to extreme weather conditions such as flooding and drought. Deborah Majerus of Iron Butterfly Farm transformed her guesthouse landscape by replacing a grass lawn with native flowers and grasses, creating a demonstration garden for climate change combat. A simple step to embrace native planting is to replace sections of lawn, which are considered 'deserts to pollinators,' with native species. These plantings provide food and habitat for wildlife, act as windbreaks, improve soil health, and attract beneficial insects, reducing the need for chemical herbicides. The second trend involves a renewed appreciation for the natural fragrance of seasonal flowers, moving away from hybridized, unscented varieties. Stefani Bittner, owner of Homestead Design Collective and co-author of 'The Fragrant Flower Garden,' notes that creating a fragrant garden requires no more effort than any other garden but offers multiplied sensory and emotional benefits. Fragrance is intrinsically linked to seasonality and the natural rhythm of a garden, contributing to mood enhancement. Examples of fragrant flowers include sweet peas, peonies, lavender, roses, stocks, and lilac, with herbs also offering aromatic contributions. Incorporating a scented shrub, such as star jasmine, near an entryway can subtly infuse the surroundings with a pleasant aroma. Finally, homemade gardening solutions are becoming increasingly popular, reflecting gardeners' resourcefulness and a desire to save money while practicing sustainable methods. This trend includes making one's own compost, green manure, and fertilizer, aligning with biodynamic and regenerative farming techniques embraced by artisan flower growers. Briana Bosch of Blossom and Branch Farm encourages home gardeners to reduce plastic use, specifically advising against landscape fabric due to its non-recyclable nature and contribution to microplastics in soil and water. Simple alternatives to plastic include using cardboard egg boxes or eggshells for seed trays and biodegradable newspaper tubes for seedlings. Producing essential gardening products at home not only promotes sustainability but also reduces environmental impact by avoiding plastic packaging. These industry trends offer practical and impactful ways for individuals to cultivate sustainable and beautiful gardens. Embracing native plants supports local ecosystems and resilience, prioritizing fragrant seasonal blooms enhances sensory experience and connection to nature, and utilizing homemade solutions reduces waste and promotes environmental health. By adopting these approaches, gardeners can make meaningful contributions to environmental well-being and enjoy the long-term benefits of a thriving, eco-conscious backyard. #SustainableGardening #NativePlanting #FragrantFlowers #HomemadeSolutions #EcoFriendlyGardening #GardenTrends2024 #ClimateChangeAdaptation #PollinatorGardens #ResourcefulGardening #SustainableGardening #NativePlanting #FragrantFlowers #HomemadeSolutions #EcoFriendlyGardening #GardenTrends2024 #ClimateChangeAdaptation #PollinatorGardens #ResourcefulGardening
