Living Wall: a Green Design Element in the Renovation of a Famous Building Celebrated in Canadian Architecture

The article discusses the $18.8 million transformation of the Bata Library at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, a building considered a significant piece of Canadian architectural heritage. Perkins + Will, the architecture and design firm, faced the challenge of modernizing the 1967 structure while preserving its historical integrity and meeting contemporary academic needs. The original library was designed for traditional book storage and solitary study, necessitating a redesign to support digital access to information and foster collaborative learning spaces. A key element of the renovation is a 278-square-foot (26-square-meter) living wall, installed in the library's atrium using the LiveWall® Indoor Living Wall System. This living wall serves as a symbolic and practical connection to nature, honoring the original architect Ronald Thom's philosophy of harmony with the natural environment. Thom, whose work was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie style and the Bauhaus movement, designed the Trent University campus to integrate with its picturesque 1,400-acre landscape along the Ontonabee River. The Bata Library, with its window-walls and atrium skylight, was conceived to rise organically from the river, and the living wall reinforces this foundational design principle. Beyond aesthetics and historical homage, the living wall also highlights Trent University's commitment to sustainability and green initiatives. While many sustainability efforts, such as energy retrofits, are not readily visible, the prominent living wall provides a tangible representation of the university's environmental values, fostering a connection with the community. Completed in October 2018, the green wall stands nearly 7 feet tall and spans 20 feet in two sections. It is strategically recessed between concrete pillars in the atrium, connecting seating areas, softening the interior, and complementing the existing cedar ceilings. LiveWall® Indoor Living Wall System was chosen for its modular design, which allows for the creation of a 'vertical garden.' The installation process involved attaching vertical furring tracks with a waterproof membrane, bolting horizontal aluminum rails with integrated irrigation components, and then sliding in high-impact, UV-resistant planter boxes. Removable liner inserts holding the growing medium and pre-grown plants are placed into these boxes. The Bata Library's living wall incorporates 150 bluestone-colored LiveWall modular planters with a drip stake irrigation system that delivers water and fertilizer. Specialized LiveWall Norb® (Nutri-Orb) bulbs, white-light LED grow bulbs, provide the necessary light spectrum for plant health while maintaining a pleasant indoor ambiance. Plant selection for the living wall emphasized diversity and suitability for the indoor environment. Horticulturalist Dave MacKenzie, president of LiveWall, highlighted the importance of diverse species for a successful green wall. The chosen plants needed to tolerate near-constant lighting and slightly dry conditions between waterings, given the bright atrium setting. Sasha Liston of Ginkgo Sustainability, the project's green infrastructure specialists, selected seven tropical species with similar light and water requirements. The design features an organic mix of 380 plants, including upright and billowing varieties with varied leaf shapes, variegation, and textures, creating a dynamic, natural landscape rather than a formal, patterned garden. This natural design also offers easier and less expensive maintenance. Ginkgo Sustainability provides bi-weekly maintenance, adhering to LiveWall guidelines. This routine includes visual inspection of plant health, trimming dead leaves and flowers, checking soil moisture, verifying irrigation system functionality, inspecting mechanical components, and adjusting irrigation schedules. Maintenance reports with photos are sent to Trent University Facilities Management, ensuring transparency and accountability. Students are notified of maintenance visits, allowing them to engage with plant experts, ask questions, and learn about the living wall's design and function as a green infrastructure component.
