Inside 6 Homes That Prove Traditional Interior Design and Modern Style Really Do Go Together

This article explores six distinct homes that successfully merge traditional interior design elements with modern aesthetics, demonstrating that these seemingly contrasting styles can coexist harmoniously. It challenges the notion that traditional decor must be antiquated or stuffy, instead showcasing how it can be integrated with contemporary sensibilities to create unique and comforting spaces. The first example is a historic Tudor-inspired house in Austin, Texas, owned by Carrie and Robert Hicks. Interior designer Carrie Hicks, along with architect Paul Lamb, preserved the home's 1926 charm while incorporating a modern, Mies van der Rohe-inspired steel and glass addition. The dining room, in particular, features an eclectic mix of furniture and art from various eras, including a Collection Particulière asymmetrical dining table, Rose Uniacke Hoof tables, Faye Toogood sconces, and an Ultrafragola mirror by Ettore Sottsass, alongside works by Berndnaut Smilde and Victor Vasarely. This project exemplifies the challenge of blending opposites to create a cohesive design. Next, the article highlights Ashley Stark Kenner's transformed 19th-century Upper East Side town house in New York. Initially intended as a minor fix-up, the project evolved into a gut renovation led by Lichten Architects. Only the façade remained, with significant structural changes including basement excavation, a new top floor, and terraces. Kenner, drawing on her extensive design background, guided the aesthetic towards a 'laid-back, organic, beachy, a little bit French' style. The living room features 1957 Pierre Jeanneret chairs, a custom sofa, a Kelvin LaVerne cocktail table, and artworks by Julian Schnabel, Brent Wadden, and Damien Hirst, illustrating a fresh take on a historic abode. A Park Avenue apartment owned by West Coast transplants showcases how California breeziness can be integrated into traditional New York decor. Designer Young Huh achieved this by using a light, bright, and airy palette of peaches, creams, and rose shades. She incorporated traditional elements like wainscoting and crown molding into the new-build high-rise, creating architectural interest. The formal living room, designed for entertaining, features a custom pomegranate-patterned rug, Art Deco Dedar-upholstered Bergère chairs, a vintage Murano chandelier, and an ancient Greek terra-cotta Aphrodite statue, blending different eras and styles effectively. Matthew Bees' Charleston apartment exemplifies a 'nouveau traditionalist' approach, characterized by a love for formal interiors infused with bold colors, varied textures, and unexpected decor choices. Notable features include a zebra rug, a flamboyant Louis Philippe bed crown, and a statue of Narcissus. Bees' aesthetic is described as 'meaningful and layered,' combining a serious collection of English antiques with playful elements like dark foyers opening to airy living spaces and the prominent use of green and yellow hues, reflecting his connection to nature and his personality. Finally, a New Jersey colonial home designed by Fawn Galli is presented as a 'funky traditional' space. Galli collaborated closely with the homeowners to understand their collective tastes, encouraging them to create a Pinterest board and observing their clothing styles. Her intuitive approach led to a home office with musical instruments, a swing chair-appointed bedroom, and an eclectic blend of vintage and modern elements with vibrant prints and textures throughout. The exterior's charming all-white facade belies the layered and dynamic interior compositions, where things have a 'weird sparkle' and traditional elements are 'jazzed up.' These examples collectively demonstrate the versatility and appeal of mixing traditional and modern design principles to create personalized and inviting living spaces. #TraditionalDesign #ModernInteriors #HomeDesign #EclecticDecor #InteriorStyling #ArchitecturalRenovation #HomeDecor #DesignFusion #ResidentialArchitecture #TraditionalDesign #ModernInteriors #HomeDesign #EclecticDecor #InteriorStyling #ArchitecturalRenovation #HomeDecor #DesignFusion #ResidentialArchitecture
