This Zany Dentist’s Office Will Make You Want a Cavity (Well, Almost)

Traditional dentist offices are often characterized by sterile environments, fluorescent lighting, and a generally unwelcoming atmosphere, leading many to dread their appointments. However, Tooth Shop, a new dental practice in downtown Los Angeles, redefines the patient experience through an innovative and aesthetically pleasing design. Interior designer Max Humphrey, drawing upon his residential design expertise, approached the project with a fresh perspective, aiming to create a space that is both calming and visually inspiring, rather than clinically sterile. Humphrey's design philosophy for Tooth Shop eschewed the typical elements of dental offices, focusing instead on creating a "modern" and "graphic" environment with a plethora of engaging details. The transformation was so successful that it challenges the common perception of a dentist's office, making it an enjoyable and even inspiring place to visit. The design incorporates three key elements that contribute to its unique appeal, starting with a reception area that mimics the ambiance of an "under-the-radar coffeehouse." The inspiration for the reception area came from coffee shops and bars in Sweden, aiming to create a comfortable and inviting waiting space. The furniture selection includes pieces from Hay and Muuto, contributing to a modern, Nordic aesthetic. The reception desk further emphasizes this style with its clean lines and pale blue Ann Sacks tiles, creating a sophisticated yet approachable first impression for patients. Adding a playful and unexpected touch, the office features melodic murals. Lyrics from The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” are prominently displayed on the walls, injecting humor and encouraging a lighthearted atmosphere. Humphrey notes that many songs could surprisingly fit a dentist’s office, with Frank Ocean’s “Novacane” being another contender. This bold design choice aims to create an immediate impact, surprising visitors with its cool and unconventional approach. Artist Evelyn Leigh of The Painted Line was responsible for these installations, ensuring they aligned with Tooth Shop’s distinctive brand colors. Finally, the office boasts a colorful gallery wall that replaces generic stock prints with large-scale photographs and original illustrations from Blu Dot and Society6. These art pieces are displayed on floating picture ledges, introducing vibrant pops of red, yellow, and pink against the white walls. A notable feature is a sign that reads “Every Day Beautiful,” strategically placed to be visible when the sliding barn door to the consultation room is open, serving as a constant reminder of the positive and uplifting environment Humphrey aimed to create. This focal point immediately captures attention upon entering the space, reinforcing the office's commitment to a beautiful and inspiring patient experience. #DentistOfficeDesign #InteriorDesign #MaxHumphrey #NordicAesthetic #GraphicDesign #ThePaintedLine #LosAngelesDesign #CommercialDesign #UniqueInteriors #DentistOfficeDesign #InteriorDesign #MaxHumphrey #NordicAesthetic #GraphicDesign #ThePaintedLine #LosAngelesDesign #CommercialDesign #UniqueInteriors
