First Look: Remsen reframes ageing through design. ‘As you age, you should want the things you need’
Remsen, a new brand founded by New York-based architects Sam Zeif and Spencer Fried, aims to transform the perception of products for the elderly, shifting them from 'geriatric' to luxury home goods. The initiative addresses the growing global concern of ageing populations and the need for beautifully designed, functional items that cater to the evolving needs of older individuals. Fried and Zeif, drawing from their experiences growing up in multi-generational households, observed the inadequacy and lack of aesthetic appeal in everyday essential objects for elders. Their vision is to create products that combine form, function, and emotional appeal, challenging the conventional notion that items for older people must be sterile, white plastic, and purely utilitarian.
The brand's mission is rooted in the belief that an appreciation for beauty and style does not diminish with age, and that people are not merely patients but individuals whose needs can be met with dignity and joy. Remsen intends to change the narrative around ageing through design, ensuring that as people age, they desire the objects they need. Both founders, trained as architects, recognized that existing essential objects often failed to bring joy or pride, appearing more as medical devices than thoughtfully designed items. Remsen seeks to rectify this by infusing craft and charm into its product line, demonstrating that these qualities are not mutually exclusive from functionality.
The initial launch includes a meticulously designed pill container and an elegant grab bar, with plans to introduce a cane, card holder, shower chair, and key turn in the near future. The Pill Container is a minimal cast aluminium object featuring a mirrored underside and sculptural compartments organized by the days of the week. Its ergonomic design and aesthetic allure are intended to transform a routine task into a meaningful ritual. Similarly, the Grab Bar, unlike its cumbersome counterparts, is conceived as an elegant addition to a bathroom, boasting a polished nickel finish, fluted profile, and concealed mounting hardware. It is designed to amplify interior design vision while providing essential functionality.
Remsen's design philosophy prioritizes both function and beauty, arguing that one should not be sacrificed for the other. The brand aims to create products that are compelling visual statements while enhancing lives, embodying an inclusive design approach that transcends age and ability barriers. The pill container, for instance, features generously sized, radially arrayed compartments, an easy-to-open magnetically secured lid, a rotating inner cover, and a sculptural geometry for easy handling. Crafted from die-cast aluminium, it is designed to sit discreetly on a nightstand or coffee table without looking out of place. The wider collection will continue to re-envision historically 'geriatric' products as luxury home goods, ultimately aiming to shift the broader narrative about what ageing looks like. The grab bar is highlighted as a prime example of Remsen's mission, showcasing how a simple, everyday object can be transformed into a graceful and enriching element within a home.
