Ecocapsule, a Sustainable Solution for Outdoor Living
The Ecocapsule represents a self-sustainable, smart, and mobile micro-unit designed to enable remote living with a minimal carbon footprint. This innovative concept emerged from the architectural studio Nice Architects, originally for the Andes Sprout Society Idea Competition, where they were tasked with designing a small housing unit for an artist on a site lacking infrastructure. Although it didn't win the competition, the distinctive design garnered significant interest, prompting the architects to further develop the project.
The first prototype of the Ecocapsule was completed in 2014. Currently, ongoing efforts focus on enhancing the existing Ecocapsule model and exploring broader applications for its underlying design principles. The unit's technical specifications include a length of 4.70 m, a width of 2.20 m, and a height of 2.50 m, with an empty weight just over 2,000 kg. It is equipped with a wind turbine capable of generating up to 750 watts and rooftop solar panels that can produce a maximum of 880 watts, contributing to its energy independence. A 9.6 kWh battery capacity stores the generated power.
Water self-sufficiency is achieved through a design that maximizes the collection of rain and dew, which is then purified into clean water using integrated filters. The outer shell is engineered to minimize energy loss, and the walls incorporate highly efficient thermal insulation materials, further enhancing the unit's sustainability and efficiency. The interior space, spanning 6.3 square meters, is functionally designed to include a kitchenette, a bathroom with a shower, and a versatile area that serves as a living room, bedroom, or even an office.
The Ecocapsule's versatility extends beyond remote outdoor living. Its potential applications are diverse, ranging from pop-up hotels and mobile offices to research stations. The design prioritizes ease of transportation, allowing it to be loaded onto a trailer by a single person. Furthermore, the adaptability of the Ecocapsule system even permits its conversion into a floating home, offering a wide array of sustainable living options. The project emphasizes self-sufficiency in energy and water, combining advanced technology with thoughtful design to create a comfortable and environmentally conscious living solution.
