Caitlin Wilson's 5 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Tile

Choosing tile for a home is a significant decision, as it represents a permanent fixture that influences the aesthetic and functional aspects of a space. Unlike paint or fabrics, which can be easily changed, tile choices endure, requiring careful consideration during the selection process. The designer Caitlin Wilson, drawing from her extensive experience, offers five key tips to navigate this important decision. The first tip emphasizes understanding the desired feel of the space. Wilson, a pattern designer, advocates for embracing a theme or inspiration. She illustrates this by describing her guest bathroom, where she aimed for an English-inspired cottage feel. To achieve this, she combined ceramic tiles with marble accents featuring warm green and blue veining, creating a cozy yet sophisticated ambiance. This approach highlights the importance of aligning tile choices with the overall design vision for a room. The second piece of advice focuses on ensuring that the chosen tile complements the surrounding rooms, especially when incorporating patterns. Wilson suggests playing with scale to avoid overwhelming the space. In areas with busier wallpaper, she opts for larger-scale, more monochromatic palettes and clean-lined floor tiles. This strategy helps balance intricate patterns with quieter tile selections. She also notes that neutrals can extend beyond traditional whites, creams, or grays, citing her use of a sophisticated blue marble as a neutral element that adds color without being overpowering. Wilson's third tip addresses the best material for the application. She notes a growing trend in using marble, particularly for backsplashes, and highlights its natural durability for high-traffic areas like entryways, breezeways, mudrooms, and hidden kitchens. For porcelain, she points out the vast array of textures, patterns, and colors available, as manufacturers can use molds to create intricate designs, borders, and trims. She provides an example of using a pearl liner and clover trim in a bathroom shower to evoke the look of curtains, demonstrating the creative possibilities with porcelain. The fourth tip centers on sourcing reputable suppliers. Wilson acknowledges the increasing availability of marble and tile from various retailers but stresses the importance of choosing reliable sources. She recommends established companies like Ann Sacks and Walker Zanger, known for their variety, customization options, and consistent quality. While big box stores might offer cost savings, she warns about potential inconsistencies in quality, such as sharp edges in mosaic tiles, and advises against them for intricate designs. Furthermore, she emphasizes the need to select skilled craftspeople for installation, especially for creative tile work, to ensure precise placement and alignment. Finally, Wilson advises considering the timeless appeal of the chosen tile. She draws inspiration from a 1920s apartment bathroom with mint-green subway tile and a pink border, which she found enduringly cool. In her own home, she adopted a fresh interpretation of the Art Deco aesthetic for her baby’s bathroom, using a vintage-inspired recycled glass mosaic with a matte finish in shades of pink and periwinkle. This design creates a classic trellis pattern that guests often admire for its refreshing pop of color and pattern, demonstrating that timelessness can also incorporate playful and unique elements. #TileSelection #HomeDesign #InteriorDecorating #CaitlinWilson #DesignTips #MaterialChoice #TimelessDesign #PatternPlay #ReputableSourcing #TileSelection #HomeDesign #InteriorDecorating #CaitlinWilson #DesignTips #MaterialChoice #TimelessDesign #PatternPlay #ReputableSourcing
