Ättlingar elevates the bathroom with bespoke medicine cabinets and mirrors

Ättlingar is a new company founded by award-winning interior designer Meghan Heeter and entrepreneur Siri Eklund, specializing in custom, handcrafted medicine cabinets, mirrors, towel bars, and toilet paper holders. The company's inception stemmed from a personal challenge Heeter and Eklund faced during the renovation of Eklund’s 1920s Tudor home in Ladue’s Fair Oaks Estates. Despite their dedication to historical authenticity, they discovered a significant gap in the market for aesthetically pleasing yet functional medicine cabinets, as existing options were primarily utilitarian. Heeter, who frequently incorporates medicine cabinets into her bath projects due to their efficient use of limited space in older homes, recognized the need for a product that could match the artistic and intentional design choices made elsewhere in a historic renovation. Eklund, sharing this vision, joined forces with Heeter to create a line of bathroom fixtures that would not only provide practical storage but also serve as unique and beautiful design elements. They emphasized the importance of everyday items like medicine cabinets in defining the overall feel and character of a bathroom, especially in homes with historical significance. Launched in the summer, Ättlingar's product line features four distinct inlay patterns. These patterns are created using thousands of precisely cut pieces of premium woods such as walnut, maple, mahogany, and sycamore. Customers can choose between maple or walnut frames, allowing for customization to fit various design aesthetics. The construction of these pieces highlights old-world craftsmanship, including dovetail corner joining and sawtooth interior shelving, reflecting a commitment to quality and detail. The inspiration for Ättlingar’s craftsmanship comes from Eklund’s family heritage. Her great-grandfather, Carl Eklund, was a renowned cabinetmaker who immigrated from Sweden to the U.S. in the early 20th century. He established a workshop in Glencoe, Chicago, which later became home to the Glencoe Historical Society, preserving his tools and showcasing his traditional Swedish woodworking practices. The company name, Ättlingar, meaning “lineage” or “descendants” in Swedish, serves as a tribute to this rich family history and the continuation of these time-honored techniques. Heeter brings extensive design expertise to Ättlingar, while Eklund contributes her business acumen, having an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern. While developing Ättlingar, Heeter continues her work as an interior designer with Castle Design. The company currently offers trade accounts for designers and architects, and homeowners can purchase their products directly through the Ättlingar Shopify website, with samples available for order. The overarching goal of Ättlingar is to elevate everyday household items, transforming them into bespoke pieces suitable for both historic preservation projects and contemporary home designs, ensuring functionality is met with unparalleled artistry. #BathroomDesign #BespokeCabinets #MedicineCabinets #HistoricRenovation #InteriorDesign #SwedishWoodworking #CustomFurniture #HomeDecor #Craftsmanship #BathroomDesign #BespokeCabinets #MedicineCabinets #HistoricRenovation #InteriorDesign #SwedishWoodworking #CustomFurniture #HomeDecor #Craftsmanship
