Lick Paint is my new favourite paint brand - here's why

This review details a hands-on experience with Lick paint, a brand offering a range of colours and finishes for interior use. The author, an experienced renovator, sought a reliable paint brand after trying several others for a 1950s house renovation. The testing process involved painting two rooms with three different Lick hues: a dark, a medium, and a light shade. The paint was applied to fresh plaster, as well as to built-in wooden wardrobes, a radiator, doors, and a tiled window sill. Different application methods, including paint brushes, rollers, and a paint gun, were used to assess versatility. Upon initial inspection, the paint arrived well-protected, with neatly stacked cans and a branded stir stick. The paint's thickness was noted, and the colours matched the samples accurately. For the smaller room, a matt finish of Blue 07 was applied using a paint gun. The author had to estimate the dilution for the sprayer as explicit instructions were not readily available on Lick's website, settling on a 20% dilution. This proved effective, providing good coverage with minimal drips and splatter. As expected for a thorough finish, a second coat was necessary to ensure full tone development and to cover any areas where the mist coat might have shown through, aligning with Lick's claim of a “flawless finish in two coats.” The paint demonstrated excellent adherence to various surfaces—metal, wood, tile, and plaster—after a light sanding and cleaning. A significant advantage observed was the significantly less potent odour compared to other low-VOC, low-odour paints used previously. For the larger room, Green 01 (matt) was used for the walls and White 03 (matt) for the ceiling, applied with a roller and paintbrush. The roller provided impressive coverage on the first coat, almost making a second coat seem unnecessary, though a second coat was ultimately applied for consistency and an even finish, including on the wardrobes which were sprayed. The self-priming nature of Lick paint contributed to a much-improved appearance of the wardrobes with minimal effort. The paint also exhibited a fast drying time, appearing dry much sooner than the recommended 2-4 hours between coats. Durability was also a key positive, with the paint remaining unscratched even weeks after application in a busy environment. Furthermore, the colour accuracy, where the wall colour perfectly matched the sample stickers, was highly praised, addressing a common issue with other paint brands. The overall verdict highlights Lick paint as a high-quality, durable option with a lovely finish, making it a preferred choice for future renovation projects. While acknowledging the higher price point compared to some mass-market brands, the review concludes that the quality justifies the cost. A 2.5L tin of most Lick paint colours costs £45, with Pure Brilliant White 00 being slightly cheaper at £35. This positions Lick as more affordable than luxury brands like Coat, Little Greene, and Farrow & Ball, but more expensive than mainstream options such as Dulux, GoodHome, and Valspar. Lick paint samples are available for £2 each, or £1.60 for four or more. The paint is available directly from the Lick website and through B&Q, with a professional version, LickPro, offered at Screwfix. In terms of quality, Lick is comparable to Coat paint, both being eco-friendly, low-VOC, highly pigmented, and offering good coverage, with Lick being the more budget-friendly of the two. Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt is suggested as a cheaper alternative for trade use. #LickPaintReview #HomeRenovation #PaintComparison #DIYHomeImprovement #InteriorPainting #ProductReview #EcoFriendlyPaint #LowVOCPaint #DurablePaint #LickPaintReview #HomeRenovation #PaintComparison #DIYHomeImprovement #InteriorPainting #ProductReview #EcoFriendlyPaint #LowVOCPaint #DurablePaint
