This growth has resulted in the proliferation of mega-structures, often designed for maximum density, height, and efficiency. These developments, which frequently combine sprawling malls with transit hubs, prioritize economic returns and convenience but often neglect their urban context, environmental impact, and the human walking experience. Pedestrians within these complexes can become disoriented, losing a sense of time, location, and environmental awareness due to the enclosed, air-conditioned environments that lack windows or natural light. In response to these prevailing urban trends, Wang Weijen Architecture (WWA) presented an exhibition titled "Courtyardism." This exhibition proposes a critical counterpoint to overscaled urbanism by re-centering architectural principles around the balance between interior and exterior space, the accommodation of high-density development with environmental awareness, and the preservation of human scale, walkability, and spatial clarity. The exhibition spans over a decade of WWA’s work, focusing on institutional campuses, to demonstrate how these principles can be applied in practice. At the core of WWA's approach is the concept of the courtyard, utilized as both a spatial strategy and a conceptual device. Courtyards introduce purposeful voids that mediate between inside and outside, structure and landscape, providing rhythm and relief within dense architectural volumes. In WWA's educational and institutional projects, such as the Shenzhen Fuhai Middle School, the courtyard becomes an agency for restoring human scale, climatic responsiveness, and contextual awareness. This approach is exemplified by a hierarchy of courtyards—large, medium, and small—each serving different scales of activity and interaction within the campus. A large running track acts as an anchor and a courtyard, organizing surrounding buildings. The architects approached the project from the perspective of a future tourist, aiming to blend new development seamlessly with the historical context. The new exhibition hall is strategically located to form a poetic entrance between the water and a bridge. On one side, it faces the recently renovated Xiaoyi old street, enhancing its functionality and vibrancy. On the northern side, the site is adjacent to the Fengxi river, a significant local natural feature. This unique riverside location and the presence of abandoned public houses influenced the building's distinct scales and specific geometric design. The designers focused on integrating the new structure without disrupting the existing architectural character of the town. Recognizing the scarcity of public spaces for residents within Fengqiao's ancient urban fabric, the architects incorporated a main square in the Xiaoyi old street to welcome visitors. This design choice provides a much-needed communal area. A key element of the entrance experience involves a physical and psychological transition: guests ascend a bridge with a gentle incline, crossing a body of water before entering the hall. This act of crossing is intended to facilitate a mood shift, preparing visitors for the immersion into the ancient town. Facing the Fengxi river, the architects developed a semi-enclosed square, bordered by old houses and arches. The surfaces of the glass box are adorned with abstract depictions of mountains and water, and at night, subtle lighting from within the stone creates a gentle glow. Heimat Architects designed the Learning Center at the Central Campus of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei, China, completed in 2025. The chosen site was a neglected corner at the easternmost edge of the campus, bordered by boundary walls, a commercial building, residential blocks, and an elevated expressway, with an underground tunnel connecting the East and Central Campuses beneath it. The challenging nature of the site, particularly its irregular shape and the presence of the underground tunnel, significantly influenced the building's design and structural solutions. The architects had to consider these constraints while maximizing the building's functional area and integrating it into the campus environment. The irregular shape of the plot, combined with a 9-meter wide underground tunnel passing through its middle, presented a complex structural challenge. This modern interpretation transformed the typology of traditional bamboo pergolas into a stacked and overlapping mesh panel design. Ting Yu drew inspiration for the structure from historical Chinese art, specifically an Imperial-era handscroll depicting walled gardens, a wisteria-covered pergola, and structured paths within a lush landscape. The contemporary design mimics natural forms; the curved panels vary in height and width, resembling leaves.
