You Need a Design Blueprint for Your Houseplants

Zilah Drahn, founder of Los Angeles-based plant design studio Plants & Spaces, emphasizes that designing with houseplants goes beyond merely selecting plants; it involves creating a thoughtful blueprint that integrates living art into a space. Drahn, whose clients include celebrities like Emma Chamberlain and Kendrick Lamar, approaches plant design by first understanding the client's vision, considering plants as dynamic art pieces that bring life and energy into a room. Her passion for nature originated from her childhood, spending hours in her mother's garden, which evolved into a spiritual connection and eventually a thriving business, sparked by friends seeking her plant advice during the pandemic. Drahn noticed a common trend among clients using generic white cylinder or terracotta planters, prompting her to explore more unique and artistic planter options. She views plants as conversation starters that feed off a space's energy, contributing to growth and excitement. For her, plant design is a much deeper process than simply placing a decorative item. She offers several key takeaways for developing an effective houseplant blueprint. First, understanding a plant's origins and natural environment is crucial. Drahn educates her clients on each plant's native light, humidity, and growth patterns, enabling them to determine the ideal placement within their homes. This knowledge ensures the plant thrives long-term and helps inform its arrangement within the living space. For instance, a trailing plant that prefers forest floors should not be placed in a west-facing window, while a desert plant might not do well in a humid bathroom, despite its aesthetic appeal there. Second, Drahn advocates for creating a statement plant moment rather than filling a room with excessive greenery. She encourages clients to focus on one significant plant or vignette, pairing exotic trees with vintage vessels or sculptural trailing houseplants on pedestals. This approach makes the plant and its unique planter the focal point, potentially even more so than furniture or traditional art pieces, generating intrigue and conversation. Third, personalization is a core aspect of Drahn's design philosophy. She strives to forge a connection between clients and their plants, ensuring they genuinely resonate with their selections. She recalls a project where she sourced an antique Chinese planter for a client, which evoked emotional memories of her grandmother, demonstrating the profound personal connections plants and vessels can create within a home. Drahn also offers practical advice for plant care. She simplifies light requirements by suggesting that most indoor houseplants thrive one to three feet away from a window. She also highlights the often-overlooked impact of HVAC systems on plant health. Air conditioning and heating vents can rapidly dry out soil, necessitating careful placement and regular moisture checks. Adding top coverings like rocks and moss can help retain soil moisture in affected areas. Finally, Drahn emphasizes that planters don't always have to be traditional containers. She encourages creativity by staging plants in their nursery pots within unique vessels found at estate sales, clients' homes, or online marketplaces like Etsy and 1stDibs. This method allows for the use of objects with history and character, avoiding generic planters. For watering, plants can be temporarily removed, or a small plastic saucer can be used for drainage within the vessel, with packing paper and moss or rocks filling any gaps to create a polished look. This approach allows for endless possibilities in integrating plants stylishly and uniquely into any interior design scheme. #HouseplantDesign #PlantCare #InteriorDecor #ZilahDrahn #PlantsAndSpaces #DesignInspiration #HomeDecor #PlantStyling #HouseplantDesign #PlantCare #InteriorDecor #ZilahDrahn #PlantsAndSpaces #DesignInspiration #HomeDecor #PlantStyling
