Vogue's flooring guide will ensure you never look up

Flooring is a fundamental element in establishing a home's aesthetic, serving as the base for the overall design. The decision on flooring is significant, not only due to the financial investment and effort involved but also because of its long-term impact on the space's design. Unlike furniture or fixtures, flooring cannot be easily changed, requiring careful consideration to align with the resident's aesthetic preferences and budget. Interior designer Ritu Nanda emphasizes that flooring should complement a home's architectural style and interior design. She suggests using natural and rougher stones for country homes, contrasting with highly polished stone or marble for city residences. Nanda favors stone floors and reserves laminates for less trafficked areas like bedrooms. For those preferring wooden floors, she recommends natural wood specially treated for outdoor areas such as pools, and engineered wood for bedrooms. She has also incorporated reconditioned teak floorboards in her projects. Rasesh Jain of Symphony Flooring notes the rising popularity of wooden flooring due to its ease of installation and low maintenance. Real wood flooring from regions like the US and Europe is often sustainably sourced from FSC certified forests. Engineered wood is highlighted for its extended lifespan, potentially lasting over 25 years with proper maintenance. To make flooring a focal point, bold, patterned ceramics or rustic terracotta tiles can be employed. Nanda advocates for local materials, citing Indian marble, Kota stone, granite, slate, and various limestones as excellent options. She stresses that the finish of the stone, ranging from high-gloss to matte, is as crucial as the type itself. Hardy local stones like kadappa are suitable for high-traffic areas such as driveways, while neutral-colored floors offer versatility for building diverse aesthetics. Marble remains a popular choice in India for its elegance. Rupesh Shinde, founder of The Quarry Gallery (TQG), advises selecting stone based on the space and its usage. He cautions that certain spices and oils in Indian cuisine can stain natural floors and recommends more durable, less porous stones like granite and quartzite for kitchens. Shinde debunks the notion that marble flooring is high-maintenance, stating that with simple care, such as padding furniture and routine cleaning, marble can last. TQG employs a special vacuum process, QVAC, to enhance the durability of brittle stones like onyx, and BactoFinish treatment to inhibit bacteria and mold. Precise installation by trained artisans is also a key factor in ensuring longevity. Terrazzo, a patterned flooring tile made of cement with glass or stone chips, is experiencing a resurgence. Firdaus Variava of Bharat Floorings and Tiles explains that terrazzo is natural, handmade, and well-suited for warm climates like India. The inclusion of stone or glass chips increases durability, reduces porosity, enhances shine, and offers design flexibility, allowing for a wide array of finishes through varied chip types, sizes, background colors, and distribution. Variava has created bespoke tiles featuring semi-precious stones, mother of pearl, and brass inlays. Regardless of the choice—marble, wood, or patterned tiles—the article concludes that careful selection is paramount, as flooring is a long-term investment. Shinde's advice for durable and timeless flooring includes: choosing flooring appropriate for its intended use (indoor, outdoor, wet, or dry areas), ensuring marble slabs are at least 20mm thick, placing a mat at the door to prevent scratching from gravel, and padding furniture legs to avoid marks on the floor. #FlooringGuide #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #MarbleFlooring #WoodenFlooring #TerrazzoTiles #SustainableMaterials #HomeAesthetics #RenovationTips #FlooringGuide #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #MarbleFlooring #WoodenFlooring #TerrazzoTiles #SustainableMaterials #HomeAesthetics #RenovationTips
