This vertical garden device makes indoor gardening possible
The Gardyn system introduces an innovative AI-based device designed to facilitate indoor gardening, catering to individuals without prior expertise. This system, which debuted at CES 2021, aims to revolutionize how people cultivate produce indoors through its sophisticated design and an accompanying AI assistant named Kelby. Gardyn consists of a base with a six-gallon water reservoir and a pump, which circulates water to seed pods known as yCubes. Three vertical columns extend from the base, allowing for the growth of up to 30 plants. The system also incorporates two poles with LED grow lights that emulate natural sunlight, crucial for indoor plant development.
To initiate the gardening process, users simply insert a yCube into a column. Once activated, the water circulation system and LED lights automatically manage most of the plant care. An AI-based sensor further supports this by sending progress updates and alerts via a dedicated app. Plants are grown in a partially hybriponic environment, eliminating the need for soil or external fertilizers beyond what is provided in the yCubes, thereby ensuring a pest-free and low-maintenance gardening experience. Gardyn offers a diverse selection of fruit, herb, vegetable, and flower seed pods, all guaranteed to be organic and GMO-free, with minor exceptions due to supply chain issues. Additionally, seedless yCubes are available for those who prefer to use their own seeds.
A key advantage of Gardyn is its vertical gardening capability, which enables the cultivation of a substantial number of plants—up to 30—within a minimal footprint, making it particularly suitable for apartment living. The device's sleek and minimalist aesthetic allows it to seamlessly integrate into various home decors. Furthermore, the AI-enabled assistant, Kelby, continuously monitors the growing process, utilizing integrated cameras to visually detect any abnormalities such as pests, fluctuations in water levels, or temperature deviations. Kelby then promptly notifies users through the app, offering expert guidance and ensuring the optimal health and growth of the plants. This integrated approach simplifies indoor gardening, making it accessible and efficient for novices and experienced gardeners alike.
