This Surprising Paint Mistake Could Be Making Your Home Look Cheap (And It’s Not the Color)

The perception of a home's value can be significantly influenced by paint choices, not just in terms of color but more critically, the paint's sheen or finish. A common misconception is that certain colors inherently make a space appear less expensive. However, design experts suggest that the finish of the paint plays a more substantial role in how walls are perceived, particularly regarding imperfections and overall appearance. There are several types of paint finishes, each with distinct characteristics. Flat finish, the most matte option, reflects minimal light and is effective at concealing minor surface flaws like dents and cracks. While it is generally harder to clean, its ability to mask imperfections can contribute to a smoother, more uniform look. Eggshell finish offers a subtle luster, making it a popular choice in design. It provides a slightly more durable and cleanable surface than flat paint, while still being low-sheen enough to hide some minor flaws. Satin finish is shinier than eggshell but is not considered a full gloss. Its reflective qualities make it suitable for dimly lit areas, helping to bounce light around the room. This finish is also known for its durability, making it a practical option for high-traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. Gloss finishes, including semi-gloss and high-gloss, provide a highly reflective, often shellacked appearance. High-gloss finishes typically require professional application due to their tendency to highlight every surface detail. According to California-based designer Ashley Macuga, eggshell and satin finishes can inadvertently make walls appear less refined. This is because their increased reflectivity tends to accentuate imperfections such as bumps, seams, roller marks, and patches on drywall. Even tiny flaws that might be invisible under a flat paint become noticeable with shinier finishes. Consequently, unless walls are perfectly smooth, which is uncommon even in new constructions, opting for a flat paint finish can create a more uniform and sophisticated aesthetic. While an eggshell finish is often considered a versatile choice, designers advise caution with satin finishes on walls that are not flawlessly smooth. Satin finishes can also deepen colors, contributing to an uneven look on imperfect surfaces. Flat finishes, by diffusing light rather than reflecting it, are more effective at concealing these issues. Another factor influencing how paint appears is the amount of natural light in a room. For north-, west-, and south-facing rooms, warm paint tones are generally recommended, while cooler tones are often better suited for south-facing spaces. #PaintFinishes #HomeDesign #InteriorDecor #PaintTips #DesignMistakes #HomeImprovement #Sheen #WallPaint #ColorSelection #PaintFinishes #HomeDesign #InteriorDecor #PaintTips #DesignMistakes #HomeImprovement #Sheen #WallPaint #ColorSelection
