This Surf Rack Will Make Your Favorite Board Look Like It’s Floating on the Wall
Nathan Kovari has developed the Air Surf Rack, an innovative solution for displaying surfboards that addresses the limitations of traditional board storage methods. The Air Surf Rack is designed to mount surfboards vertically on a wall, creating an illusion of the board floating. This design aims to highlight the surfboard itself as a piece of art, rather than the rack holding it. The primary motivation for its creation stemmed from Kovari's dissatisfaction with existing racks that either failed to adequately display his boards or were visually obtrusive.
The Air Surf Rack accommodates nearly any surfboard equipped with two or more fins. The board is secured in place by a bottom break mechanism, which prevents it from tipping or falling forward. Additionally, a top component with clear, adjustable straps provides extra stability by securing the nose of the board close to the wall. This design ensures that the rack itself remains largely hidden, maintaining the floating aesthetic.
A notable feature of the Air Surf Rack system is its compact design. Unlike bulkier, horizontal two-piece racks, the Air Surf Rack fits discreetly against the wall at approximately knee height, minimizing its footprint and maximizing visual focus on the surfboard. This makes it suitable for daily use, not just for collectors or boards with sentimental value, offering a modern storage solution that integrates seamlessly into a living space.
Kovari and his team also introduced the Air Surf Rack Ignited, an enhanced version that incorporates an LED light behind the board. This lighting feature creates a 'halo effect' at night, further accentuating the surfboard and adding an aesthetic dimension, which was inspired by Kovari's desire to view his board in the evening. The light source is designed to remain hidden from view, preserving the clean, floating appearance.
The Air Surf Rack project launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund its production, with plans for the racks to become available in retail stores in January. Early supporters of the Kickstarter campaign are offered the opportunity to purchase the racks at a wholesale price. Prior to its public launch, the product underwent testing by various shapers and surf companies globally. For instance, Hurley has already placed a bulk order for Air Surf Racks to be used in displaying boards at their Surf Club in Spain, indicating industry acceptance and demand. The retail price for the Air Surf Rack ranges from $69.99 to $99.99, reflecting its innovative design and functionality.
