This Is the (Unexpected!) Living Room Layout Designers Love for 2025
Apartment Therapy's fifth annual "State of Home Design Survey" revealed that 45% of 154 designers prefer a living room layout with two sofas facing each other for 2025. This arrangement, historically known as a "conversation layout," emphasizes human connection and interaction. Madeline Hemingway of Madeline Hemingway Design highlights its effectiveness in fostering conversation, noting that it minimizes neck craning, which can occur with typical television-focused layouts.
The popularity of this layout is attributed to its versatility and ability to create a sense of intimacy and balance in a room. Designer Andrea Schumacher points out that it helps frame a space and encourages conversation among guests. This setup is particularly beneficial in open-plan homes, where it can define the living area and make it feel more inviting. It also offers flexibility for various activities, such as reading, entertaining, or simply relaxing.
While this layout is advantageous for promoting interaction, designers acknowledge potential drawbacks, particularly in smaller spaces. For instance, the layout might not always accommodate a television easily, making it less ideal for those who prioritize a media-centric living room. However, some designers propose creative solutions, such as placing a TV on a wall to the side or opting for a more minimalist entertainment setup.
The survey also explored other popular living room layouts. Thirty-four percent of designers favored a sectional paired with accent chairs, indicating a preference for comfort and ample seating, especially for larger families or frequent entertainers. Twenty-one percent preferred a traditional arrangement of one sofa with two accent chairs, a classic and adaptable option for various room sizes and styles. These findings suggest a broader trend towards functional and aesthetically pleasing living spaces.
The article emphasizes that the ideal living room layout depends on individual needs and the specific space. While the facing sofas layout is gaining popularity for its conversational benefits and aesthetic appeal, other configurations remain viable options depending on how a person uses their living room. Ultimately, the goal is to create a comfortable and functional space that reflects personal style and promotes well-being.
