This injection molding technology creates super lightweight yet durable materials

Covestro and Arcesso Dynamics SL have introduced Arfinio®, a novel material developed through a groundbreaking reaction injection molding (RIM) technology utilizing aliphatic polyurethanes. This innovation addresses the challenge of creating materials that are simultaneously lightweight, durable, hygienic, sustainable, and formable, a combination previously considered unattainable in a single process. Arfinio®, launched in October 2022 and awarded the “Best of the Best” at Interzum in May 2023, distinguishes itself by being the first material to employ aliphatic polymers in the RIM process. The material’s unique formulation and manufacturing process result in truly seamless surfaces, eliminating joints and structural weak points, which significantly enhances its strength and longevity. Arfinio® boasts exceptional resistance to scratches and abrasions, offering a high-performance solution for various applications. It is available in a wide spectrum of colors and gloss levels, providing designers with extensive creative freedom. A key characteristic of Arfinio® is its remarkable lightness; even its densest version is 40% lighter than conventional solid surface materials, contributing to easier handling and installation. The versatility of Arfinio® makes it suitable for a broad array of applications. Its hygienic properties and ease of cleaning make it ideal for bathroom interiors, such as shower plates and bathtubs, where non-slip surfaces and water resistance are crucial. The material’s outstanding thermal insulation properties, superior to standard solid surfaces, help retain heat, benefiting applications like bathtubs by keeping water warm for extended periods. Furthermore, Arfinio® is well-suited for durable casings for medical devices, architectural elements like interior cladding and building facades, and even lightweight consumer products. Its ability to achieve complex and customized shapes through the RIM process, combined with its high performance, opens new possibilities for design and manufacturing. Sustainability is a core consideration in the development of Arfinio®. The material incorporates bio-based raw materials, and its high impact resistance ensures a prolonged service life. At the end of its life cycle, products made from Arfinio® can be mechanically recycled, contributing to a more circular economy. The RIM manufacturing process itself offers significant advantages over traditional solid sheet manufacturing, such as reduced production time and complexity. The custom mold design allows for the creation of intricate shapes in a single step, eliminating the need for subsequent processes like thermoforming, CNC cutting, gluing, sanding, or polishing. This streamlines production and reduces labor. While Arfinio® offers numerous benefits, its application is most cost-effective for large-scale manufacturing due to the initial investment in custom molds. The costs associated with RIM make it less suitable for small-scale productions or single pieces. However, for projects requiring high volumes of uniformly designed products, Arfinio® presents an efficient and high-quality solution. Its blend of aesthetic appeal, tactile qualities, and technical performance positions Arfinio® as a compelling alternative to other solid materials, particularly where hygiene, lightweight construction, and seamless integration are paramount. Potential applications also extend to tech-rich designs, enabling the incorporation of interactive surfaces, electronic components, and backlighting with ease, further highlighting its adaptability in modern design contexts. #InjectionMolding #LightweightMaterials #DurableMaterials #PolyurethaneTechnology #SustainableDesign #InnovativeMaterials #ArchitecturalMaterials #HygienicSurfaces #ManufacturingInnovation #InjectionMolding #LightweightMaterials #DurableMaterials #PolyurethaneTechnology #SustainableDesign #InnovativeMaterials #ArchitecturalMaterials #HygienicSurfaces #ManufacturingInnovation
