These '80s Home Décor Trends Are Back—Here's How to Try Them in Your Space

After years of minimalist design trends dominating interiors, 1980s home décor is experiencing a significant resurgence, offering a refreshing departure from restrained aesthetics. This revival embraces an abundance of beauty, shapes, textures, and colors, directly contrasting the Scandi-style minimalism and mid-century modern decorating that have been prevalent. The '80s ethos, characterized by its cheeky, colorful, and curvy elements, resonates with many seeking to inject fun into their homes and move away from overly serious design. Several key trends from the 1980s are making a comeback, reimagined for contemporary spaces to avoid creating a time capsule effect. Maximalism, with its dramatic swagged curtains, abundant prints, power reds, and layers of florals, is being embraced by designers who incorporate these details with a global and on-trend touch. This approach to maximalist decorating celebrates an 'over-the-top' aesthetic while maintaining sophistication. Another significant trend is the return of ruffles, appearing in throw pillows, trays, pots, and candlesticks. This 'ruffle revival' taps into a nostalgic sense of comfort and home, particularly for those who grew up in the '80s. To prevent a dated look, moderation is key, with experts recommending a mix of maximalist prints and more muted solids. Mauve paint, often considered a 'forbidden color' due to its strong association with the '80s, is also making a comeback. Modern interpretations of mauve are edgy and cool, often combined with sugary pinks and tropical prints to offer a fresh and romantic spin on '80s style. Graphic black-and-white patterns, including stripes, grids, and zebra prints, are a shorthand for '80s aesthetics. These bold combinations are being incorporated through artwork rather than just fabrics, providing a contemporary twist. Abstract and circular forms, reminiscent of the playful graphic touches of the decade like lightning bolts and squiggles, are also being integrated into furniture, lighting, and accessories to create whimsical yet tasteful spaces. Brass and glass pieces are hallmark elements of '80s décor, with brass accents combined with glass creating a 'Hollywood Regency' vibe. Specific items like lotus lamps are particularly sought after. Curvy furniture, such as serpentine couches, is used to soften overall ambiances, often paired with brass and glass coffee tables and sumptuous curtains. Fluted details and blush-and-brown colorways are re-emerging, especially in bathrooms, where fluted vanities become focal points. These are often complemented by '80s patterned wall coverings, with harmonious color schemes ensuring a cohesive, era-evoking look without being overtly retro. Veined marble, a nod to the '80s interpretation of Greek and Roman classical features, is now seen in more dramatic black, green, and burgundy hues, offering a modern and bold classical aesthetic. Finally, the iconic Memphis Group style, an Italian design movement from 1981-1988, is influencing contemporary interiors. This style, known for its bright colors and whimsical triangular and rounded forms, is being adapted with a more pared-back palette, incorporating muted golds and blues. Memphis-inspired looks can be achieved by adding small doses of color through accessories like objets d'art or desk lamps in vibrant hues. #EightiesDecor #HomeTrends #MaximalistDecor #RuffleRevival #MauvePaint #BlackAndWhiteInteriors #CurvyFurniture #BrassAndGlass #MemphisGroupStyle #EightiesDecor #HomeTrends #MaximalistDecor #RuffleRevival #MauvePaint #BlackAndWhiteInteriors #CurvyFurniture #BrassAndGlass #MemphisGroupStyle
