The 2022 Home Trend We Really Didn't See Coming

As the world grapples with the ongoing pandemic, a significant shift in interior design trends has emerged, reflecting a collective desire for escapism and a return to lavish, strong aesthetics. This trend, dubbed "Hellenistic Revival" by Pinterest, draws inspiration from ancient Greek motifs, moving beyond the '70s and '80s decadence popularized by Gianni Versace, to a more direct homage to Hellenistic opulence. The longing for a carefree era, reminiscent of Studio 54, and the current dystopian reality are driving homeowners to transform their living spaces into luxurious sanctuaries, embodying the strength and individuality associated with Greek gods and goddesses. This trend intertwines nostalgic design elements with Greek grandeur, as highlighted by designer Karen B. Wolf, who notes the incorporation of bust statues, Corinthian cornices, specific color palettes like gold, blue, black, and white, Aphrodite imagery, and ancient vessels. Achieving the Hellenistic Revival look involves several key elements. First, homeowners are embracing Greek trims and Corinthian columns. While full-scale architectural changes are impractical and detrimental to home value, the trend encourages the use of ornate architecture through more accessible means. This can be accomplished with peel-and-stick millwork, crown moldings, ceiling medallions, and corbels, allowing for a grand aesthetic without permanent alterations. These removable options provide flexibility and ease of application, making the "Parthenon-palace style" achievable for a broader audience. Secondly, busts and statue art are central to this trend, replacing the fleeting popularity of female body candles and bum vases. Instead, the focus shifts to more timeless, Greek-inspired sculptures that celebrate the human form. These pieces introduce mythological gods, goddesses, and epic heroes into decor, allowing individuals to choose figures whose powers resonate with their aspirations for the year ahead. This move away from ephemeral decor items towards more classic representations signifies a desire for enduring beauty and symbolic meaning within the home. Finally, neoclassical-inspired wallpaper plays a crucial role in setting the atmospheric tone. While chintz and chinoiserie have been prevalent, the Hellenistic Revival introduces a moodier, more romantic aesthetic, specifically referencing Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, lust, beauty, and passion. Wallpapers featuring her symbols—roses, doves, sparrows, and myrtle—and colors inspired by a Grecian sunset (emerald, aqua, pale green, red, pink, violet, and various shades of blue) create a whimsical and passionate backdrop. This includes floral patterns, songbird motifs, and soft, feminine hues, contributing to a rich and evocative interior that captures the essence of ancient Greek artistry and mythology. #HomeDecor #DesignTrends #HellenisticRevival #GreekInspired #InteriorDesign #HomeStyling #LuxuryDecor #AncientArt #MythologyInDesign #HomeDecor #DesignTrends #HellenisticRevival #GreekInspired #InteriorDesign #HomeStyling #LuxuryDecor #AncientArt #MythologyInDesign
