Temporary Floors: 5 Affordable Options for Adding Style to Your Apartment

This article explores five affordable and temporary flooring solutions for renters looking to upgrade the aesthetic of their apartments without committing to permanent changes. Many renters often find themselves with less-than-ideal flooring, such as worn tile or outdated carpeting, and these temporary options provide a way to personalize their living space. However, it is crucial for tenants to consult their landlords before undertaking any flooring alterations, even temporary ones, as most leases include clauses restricting modifications without prior permission. The city's building code also mandates the use of non-flammable materials for any flooring installations. One innovative solution presented is the use of garage mats, typically designed for mechanic's workrooms and car lots. These thick vinyl coverings are surprisingly suitable for kitchens and bathrooms due to their durability, ease of cleaning, and availability in various colors. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, garage mats offer practical benefits like insulation and noise reduction. They are also relatively inexpensive, with snap-together tiles costing around $125 for 40 square feet and mat-style flooring, which can be cut to size and installed like carpet, priced at approximately $300 for a 7.5 by 17-foot roll. Another option for renters is to create a faux wall-to-wall carpeting effect by layering several throw rugs. While a full wall-to-wall carpet installation might be too costly or difficult to reverse for renters, arranging multiple area rugs can achieve a similar cozy and stylish look, albeit with a more eclectic vibe. Alternatively, temporary carpet tiles, which adhere to the floor with specialized double-sided tape, offer a more uniform approach. These can be found for around $200 for a carton covering 45 square feet during sales. Removable vinyl tiles provide a versatile and cost-effective way to transform floors. Unlike traditional vinyl, modern removable tiles come in a wide array of handsome or whimsical designs, moving beyond the often-unattractive "faux parquet" of the past. These peel-and-stick products can be cut to fit, applied over existing tiles, and easily removed upon moving out. A Spanish-style removable tile, for example, can cost as little as $8.75 for a 54-inch square. For those seeking a different texture, a temporary cork floor can be installed with thick cork sheets, priced at about $0.70 per square foot, and a temporary adhesive. For renters desiring the look of hardwood without permanent installation, laminate boards offer a viable alternative. These boards click together without the need for adhesive and can be laid over most existing floors, excluding carpet due to potential mold concerns. IKEA offers laminate panels that are suitable for dry rooms, costing approximately $40 per pack for nine panels, each measuring roughly 7.4 by 50 inches. Finally, for long-term renters, a more permanent flooring solution might be considered, provided the landlord's approval is secured. If the chosen material is of higher quality than the standard and neutrally designed, landlords, especially smaller ones, may be amenable to such an upgrade, recognizing the potential value it adds to the property. #TemporaryFlooring #RentalUpgrades #HomeImprovement #DIYHomeDecor #AffordableDesign #ApartmentLiving #InteriorDesign #RemovableFlooring #RentersSolutions #TemporaryFlooring #RentalUpgrades #HomeImprovement #DIYHomeDecor #AffordableDesign #ApartmentLiving #InteriorDesign #RemovableFlooring #RentersSolutions
