Sussanne Khan and Gauri Khan get personal about design basics—take notes!

Sussanne Khan of The Charcoal Project and Gauri Khan of Gauri Khan Designs share their insights into design fundamentals, inspirations, and the evolution of the interior design industry. Sussanne Khan’s Charcoal Project has recently expanded to Hyderabad with an impressive 35,000 square-foot store, featuring a curated selection of furniture, art, and interiors, alongside a dedicated floor for Gauri Khan Designs. This collaboration highlights a blend of unique works, limited-edition furniture, and fine art, offering a distinctive retail experience enhanced by bespoke furnishings and wallcoverings from Janavi and de Gournay. Both designers emphasize the importance of understanding a client's emotional connection to their space. Sussanne's initial question to clients revolves around how they want to feel in their environment, ensuring the design reflects their personality and lifestyle. Similarly, Gauri focuses on the emotional impact of design, believing that aesthetics should align with feelings. This client-centric approach guides their creative process, from conceptualization to the final execution, especially given The Charcoal Project's in-house production capabilities. Their design philosophies are rooted in diverse inspirations. Sussanne draws cues from her global travels, art, and design fairs, alongside the coastal influences of California and Mumbai, blending Eastern and Western aesthetics into a fluid and evolving style. Gauri finds inspiration in art, travel, nature, and the dynamic interplay of light within a space, always prioritizing the client's narrative. This broad spectrum of influences contributes to their distinctive and evolving design sensibilities. Regarding interior themes, Sussanne describes her approach as a balance of feminine and masculine elements, combining fluid artistic details with raw textures and strong lines, a style she terms ‘quiet luxury’ with a fun vibe. Gauri gravitates towards timeless luxury with a contemporary twist, characterized by warm neutrals, rich textures, handcrafted details, and a subtle touch of glamour. Both designers showcase an appreciation for sophisticated yet comfortable aesthetics. Key design lessons learned early on continue to shape their work. Sussanne underscores the critical role of lighting and space planning, asserting that a well-designed space must prioritize functionality and aesthetic harmony through optimized light, texture, and proportion. Gauri advocates for identifying a focal point, such as a rug, furniture piece, or artwork, and building the room's design around it. These foundational principles ensure that their spaces are not only visually appealing but also highly functional. On the subject of trends, both designers agree that while trends can offer fresh perspectives, great design is ultimately timeless and personally relevant. Sussanne notes a current shift towards warmth, deeper colors, darker woods, and a fusion of old-world charm with industrial elements, alongside the integration of smart technology. Gauri explores international design fairs and publications to stay updated but stresses the importance of personal relevance in design. They both believe that homes should feel lived-in and meaningful rather than merely adhering to transient styles. When asked about essential elements in a home, Sussanne highlights the kitchen, or 'cooking room,' as the heart of the home where families bond and create memories, considering its sidelining a significant mistake. Gauri emphasizes the transformative power of light, describing it as an essential design element that sets the mood, brings warmth, and breathes life into every corner of a home, shaping its soul. Having practiced design for over two decades, Sussanne observes a shift in the industry from opulence to a focus on warmth, personalization, craftsmanship, and sustainability, with clients increasingly involved in designs that enhance their lifestyle. Gauri, with 13 years in the field, similarly notes that design has become more personal and experience-driven. Sussanne's dream assignment is to restore and design the interiors of the Vatican City, aiming to blend its historical grandeur with luxurious textures, curated collectibles, and bespoke elements, reinterpreting its legacy through a contemporary lens of quiet luxury. #InteriorDesign #SussanneKhan #GauriKhan #TheCharcoalProject #GauriKhanDesigns #LuxuryInteriors #DesignFundamentals #HomeDecor #ArchitecturalDigest #InteriorDesign #SussanneKhan #GauriKhan #TheCharcoalProject #GauriKhanDesigns #LuxuryInteriors #DesignFundamentals #HomeDecor #ArchitecturalDigest
