Opinion: Shade perennials add color, texture to wooded yard

This article details the journey of transforming a heavily treed backyard with invasive English ivy into a lush, naturalized English-style garden using specific shade perennials. The author, Ashley Jones Brodkin, a Master Gardener since 2024, shares her personal experience and plant recommendations that have successfully created visual interest and density in her North Fulton yard. Initially, the yard lacked diversity beyond trees and ivy, prompting the desire for a more vibrant and textured landscape. Brodkin highlights several key plants that proved effective. Autumn ferns are favored for their low maintenance, unique leaf shape, and year-round presence, seamlessly integrating into a wooded environment and used as borders and in a rock garden. Azaleas, particularly the 'George L. Tabor' variety, are re-evaluated from their common hedge application to be appreciated as specimen plants when allowed to grow naturally among dense trees. Their ability to grow tall and produce significant blooms without extensive pruning adds an airy, natural aesthetic. Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’ provides a striking lime-green contrast to darker foliage, maintaining its color through winter and serving well in borders and rock gardens, even thriving in both sunny and shady spots when protected from competing lawn grasses. Ajuga reptans ‘Chocolate Chip’ is identified as the author's top choice due to its dense, evergreen, deep purple/emerald foliage that forms a resilient mat. Its bright purple flowers bloom for months, attracting pollinators. This variety is used as ground cover around walkways and rock gardens, showing tolerance to foot traffic and maintaining coverage even through winter. Halcyon hostas are selected for their large size, growing up to five feet in diameter, and their distinctive blue-green leaves, which significantly cover ground. However, hostas require mulching in winter as they die back to the crown and need protection from deer, often achieved with repellents or bird netting. Lastly, Aucuba japonica Variegata, also known as 'Gold Dust,' is recommended for its dense, evergreen foliage featuring dark green leaves with golden flecks. This shrub is ideal for backdrops or screens, thriving specifically in full shade. The author notes that plants exposed to midday sun tend to struggle, emphasizing the importance of proper placement for this variety. The article concludes by encouraging readers to use these shade perennials to create their own vibrant and textured outdoor spaces, even in shaded conditions, underscoring the importance of careful planning and understanding each plant's specific needs. The content is part of the "Garden Buzz" column, a series from Appen Media and the North Fulton Master Gardeners, aiming to educate on horticulture and ecology. #ShadePerennials #GardenDesign #LandscapingIdeas #MasterGardeners #NorthFulton #PlantRecommendations #Horticulture #GardeningActivities #ShadePerennials #GardenDesign #LandscapingIdeas #MasterGardeners #NorthFulton #PlantRecommendations #Horticulture #GardeningActivities
