Kit Kemp, Wilton Carpets create exciting carpet collection
The renowned interior designer Kit Kemp MBE has collaborated with Wilton Carpets to launch a new collection of woven, wool-rich carpets designed for hospitality, travel, and home environments. Kit Kemp, known for her unique approach to interior design and her role as Design Director of Firmdale Hotels PLC, brings her celebrated aesthetic, which has earned multiple prestigious awards including ‘Condé Nast Best Hotel in the World for Design’, to this partnership. Wilton Carpets, with nearly 400 years of weaving heritage, designs and manufactures its carpets in Britain, blending traditional craftsmanship with advanced robotic machinery.
The collaboration successfully translates Kemp’s creative vision into a tangible collection. Wilton Carpets' highly experienced design team, led by Damien Roscoe, Head of Creative, worked closely with Kemp to realize her ideas, pushing the boundaries of carpet craft. Kemp highlights that modern manufacturing technology, combined with Wilton Carpets' design expertise, has enabled the creation of subtle effects and color gradations that mimic the finish of hand-blocked fabrics, imbuing the carpets with a contemporary and joyful feel.
The made-to-order collection features nine distinctive and versatile designs, drawing inspiration from folklore, architecture, and botanical motifs. These designs are adaptable for both traditional and modern interiors. The carpets are manufactured using traditional Axminster or Wilton weaves, and some incorporate the added texture of a Brussels weave, ensuring superior design and quality. Made from a British wool-rich blend, the carpets offer durability and wear resistance, available as wall-to-wall installations or bespoke area rugs tailored for project demands.
Key designs within the collection include 'Batik,' which references hand-blocked fabrics and is available in striking red and blue colorways. 'Detail' presents a strong architectural look in six colorways, including red on blue and yellow on black. 'By Way' features a classic herringbone pattern with bright color combinations, offered in four high-contrast options. 'Domino' is inspired by traditional Turkish carpets, showcasing a large diamond repeat in four colorways, such as dynamic shades of blue and terracotta. 'Flower and Berry' is a versatile botanical pattern suitable for various settings, available in five colorways including red on off-white and off-white on pea green.
Further designs include 'Leaf Cut,' a nature-inspired pattern depicting falling leaves, available in blue with orange leaves and red with green. 'Open Plan' offers a large, tribal-influenced repeat suitable for grand spaces, in four color combinations, mostly with an off-white base. 'Tweed Fleck' is a modern classic tweed design with vibrant flecks, available in seven high-impact colorways like red, teal, and blue. Lastly, 'Squiggle' is a simple yet impactful linear geometric design, available in inverse colors and five other off-white combinations, ideal for tailoring halls and stairways. This collection exemplifies Kit Kemp’s signature richness of pattern and understanding of color, making craft-inspired carpets accessible for a wide audience.
