Discover Luxury Flooring at The Carpetman by Stark
The Carpetman by Stark, a family-owned business, has been a fixture in the Hamptons for over 50 years, specializing in floor coverings. The company was founded in 1971 by Robert Gill's father, initially focusing on '70s-style eccentric shags. Robert Gill took over the business in 1993, expanding its offerings beyond traditional carpets to include a wider range of materials like seagrass and sisal, aiming for higher-end products suitable for Hamptons' summer homes. This expansion led to a comprehensive showroom featuring thousands of wool carpet samples and a robust sewing room for custom carpet finishing, including binding and various edge options. The business also incorporated a carpet cleaning service and later, Hunter Douglas window treatments, which eventually spun off into a separate entity called Hampton Fabric and Blinds to provide customers with complete access to window treatment and fabric selections.
Robert Gill, who worked in the company throughout his high school and early college years before serving in the military, returned to purchase the business from his father. He notes that the Hamptons market for high-end flooring, including hand-knotted area rugs, is unique and demanding, surpassing even what he observed in other regions while working in seven different carpet stores across the U.S. His long-standing ambition was to establish a relationship with Stark, a prominent high-end carpet manufacturer known for its showroom and mill operations. For two decades, Stark viewed The Carpetman as a competitor due to the proximity of the Hamptons and New York City markets.
The COVID-19 pandemic, however, created an opportunity for collaboration. As Stark's operations in NYC faced slowdowns, one of its owners recognized the need for a presence on the East End of the Hamptons. Industry connections facilitated an introduction between Robert Gill and Stark, leading to The Carpetman becoming a Stark showroom. This partnership allows The Carpetman by Stark to continue serving its clientele with premium products and services, maintaining competitive pricing and exceptional service.
Looking ahead, Robert Gill expresses excitement about new product developments, particularly in outdoor carpeting. He acknowledges the historical perception of outdoor carpets as unattractive but highlights recent advancements in fiber technology. Modern outdoor carpets are now bleach-proof, soft, lack an artificial shine, and can be woven into intricate patterns typically associated with wool carpets. These new synthetic fibers are so sophisticated that they are indistinguishable from wool without a burn test. This innovation offers significant advantages to customers, including ease of cleaning, resistance to pilling from vacuum cleaners, and the luxurious aesthetic of traditional wool. Robert Gill has already integrated these new outdoor carpets into various projects, including stair installations and area rugs within homes. He emphasizes that the continuous engagement with customer projects remains a key source of excitement and satisfaction in his business endeavors. The company operates from its Southampton location, offering a blend of traditional expertise and modern innovation in floor and window coverings.
