Is it time to ditch all-white bathrooms? Here's everything I learned when I asked designers about bringing more color into my bathroom

Traditional all-white bathrooms, once celebrated for their clean, expansive, and serene aesthetic, are now being re-evaluated by interior designers who advocate for injecting more color, texture, and personality into these utilitarian spaces. While white bathrooms offer a timeless and versatile foundation, the prevailing sentiment among design experts is a shift towards more expressive and inviting schemes. Barrie Cutchie, a bathroom expert and design director at BC Designs, notes that white bathrooms have "definitely fallen out of favor, for now," drawing a parallel to the resurgence of off-white in kitchen design, suggesting its eventual return to bathrooms. However, for the current trend, color is paramount, extending from tiles and vanity units to colored baths, paint, and even bathroom wallpaper. The current color trends for bathrooms, according to Cutchie, are broadly categorized into greens and warm neutrals, with green being a particularly prominent choice for 2025. Interior designer Marie Flanigan echoes this, emphasizing that while white bathrooms remain a classic choice, incorporating subtle touches of color can significantly enhance depth and personality without overwhelming the space. She suggests introducing color through painted cabinetry, patterned tiles, or soft plaster wall washes. Several methods are proposed for integrating color into an all-white bathroom. Firstly, natural wood tones are crucial for preventing a clinical feel. Marie Flanigan highlights that natural textures, such as warm wood vanities or unlacquered brass fixtures, introduce richness and contrast to a crisp palette. Melissa Fenigstein of New Age Interiors agrees, stating that while not completely abandoning white, incorporating natural woods can achieve a spa-like atmosphere. She suggests using interesting tiles with texture, neutral colors, and warm woods to move away from a stark, sterile look while maintaining a fresh, clean, and spa-like ambiance. Secondly, colorful and patterned tiles are a key element in this design shift. Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca’ Pietra, advises against plain white tiles, recommending textured options paired with darker grout and matte-black accessories or brassware. Holly Vaughan, a designer, points to a vintage bathroom with a bright yellow and blue color palette as an example of how color can provide an "instant serotonin hit," advocating for the departure from all-white interiors. Thirdly, wallpaper and wall murals offer a transformative and relatively quick way to introduce color, pattern, and personality into a bathroom. Designer Amy Carman explains that being adventurous with color and pattern in a bathroom elevates the space from purely functional to an experience that adds joy and elegance to daily routines. She cites an example from her Olive Park project, where a dreamy mural of pink and blue clouds by Phillip Jeffries, framed by architectural millwork, creates an elevated and serene environment around a freestanding tub. Finally, for those with existing all-white schemes, adding a sink skirt is a practical way to introduce color and pattern while also gaining hidden storage. Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms, also suggests incorporating easily movable items such as plants, wooden accessories like stools or chairs, and art to infuse personality and color without undertaking major renovations. This approach allows for experimentation and personalization, moving away from the monochromatic look to a more vibrant and individual bathroom design. #BathroomDesign #ColorTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #TileTrends #Wallpaper #NaturalWoodTones #DesignTips #RenovationIdeas #BathroomDesign #ColorTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #TileTrends #Wallpaper #NaturalWoodTones #DesignTips #RenovationIdeas
