Colorful bathrooms are on trend – but what do interior design experts think?

The growing trend of colorful bathrooms, particularly colorful sanitaryware, is becoming a notable and somewhat controversial phenomenon in home design. This shift is seeing an increasing number of homeowners incorporating vibrant, kaleidoscope-like elements, reminiscent of the 1980s, into their bathroom spaces. However, this bold decorative style is not universally embraced, with interior designers holding divided opinions on its practicality and aesthetic longevity. Proponents of colorful sanitaryware, such as Alexander and Michael Christou, Founders and Directors of 1.61 London, emphasize that people are seeking to transform their homes to enhance their lifestyle, especially after spending more time indoors. They view color, pattern, and texture as simple yet effective tools for this transformation. They argue that colored sanitaryware introduces pockets of joy and helps break away from the 'stereotypical five-star bathroom style,' allowing individuals to infuse more character, life, and personality into their living spaces. This desire for uniqueness and self-expression is driving a resurgence in vintage styles, patterns, and color trends, where even minor design choices can significantly alter a room's aesthetic. They highlight that homeowners are becoming bolder and more expressive, wanting to create spaces that are unique to them. For those who are interested in adding color but are hesitant about investing in colorful sanitaryware, 1.61 London suggests alternative approaches. They recommend maintaining white sanitaryware while introducing vibrancy through different colors and textures of marble and porcelain. Incorporating metal beading, especially with brass and antique rustic brass accents, can create striking design contrasts. They also advocate for sectioning off specific areas within a bathroom to create distinct design statements, such as feature tiling a full shower area or utilizing different toned marbles with unique textures or backlighting. Additionally, they suggest using colorful, textured wallpaper with patterns that pop against brass fixtures to achieve individuality and character, making this a bold and exciting development in interior design that is accessible to many. Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms, echoes this enthusiasm, noting a rising demand for colorful sanitaryware in shades like deep mustards, heritage greens, and teal blues. For those who are still undecided, Ashdown suggests opting for white sanitaryware with exteriors that can be painted, such as cast-iron baths and retro basins. She also recommends considering colored brassware, like vibrant basin taps in fiery orange or zingy limes, for a more subtle pop of color. Conversely, some designers remain skeptical about the longevity and practicality of colorful sanitaryware. Rande Leaman of Rande Leaman Interior Design expresses her preference for incorporating color through wall tiles and flooring, while keeping sinks and toilets classic and subtle. She views colorful sanitaryware as a short-lived craze, distinguishing it from other valuable design ideas from the 1970s and 1980s. Jeff Andrews, another designer, shares this sentiment, emphasizing that while bathrooms are excellent spaces for personalizing with color, it is best introduced through tiles, stone, paint, or wallpaper, rather than through core fixtures like tubs and sinks. Ultimately, the decision to embrace colorful sanitaryware depends on individual preference, with alternatives available for those who wish to infuse color in less permanent ways, such as through bold wallpapers or tiles. #BathroomTrends #ColorfulBathrooms #InteriorDesignOpinions #Sanitaryware #HomeDecor #DesignDebate #VintageRevival #ColorInDesign #BathroomTrends #ColorfulBathrooms #InteriorDesignOpinions #Sanitaryware #HomeDecor #DesignDebate #VintageRevival #ColorInDesign
