interview: GROHE SPA blends water, nature and architecture in bathroom designs
The 'Aquatecture' installation by GROHE SPA at Milan Design Week 2024 explores the fusion of water, nature, and architecture within bathroom design, transforming traditional concepts into regenerative sanctuaries. Patrick Speck, Leader of LIXIL Global Design, EMENA, highlights the brand's philosophy of 'salum per aquam' (health through water), emphasizing the intrinsic benefits derived from this integration. The exhibition, located at the Palazzo Reale, aligns with Salone del Mobile's 'Materia Natura' theme, providing an interactive experience that respects the Milanese landmark while showcasing innovative design.
GROHE SPA's approach focuses on the bathroom as a space for holistic well-being. Speck elaborates on the 'Aquatecture' concept, which signifies the dialogue between the built environment and natural elements. The installation features four distinct spaces, each representing a core pillar of the GROHE SPA strategy: customization, luxury, colors and finishes, and multi-sensory experiences. These spaces are designed to invite visitors to interact with new products and understand the profound connection between water, architecture, and the human experience.
Central to the design philosophy is biophilic design, which aims to reintroduce nature into built environments. The exhibition incorporates organic materials, natural light, and lush greenery to create harmonious and tranquil settings, offering a respite during the bustling Milan Design Week. The 'Aquatecture' theme is further reinforced by immersive, interconnected spaces within the Palazzo Reale courtyard.
Key product highlights include the GROHE Icon 3D and the GROHE Atrio outdoor shower. The GROHE Icon 3D, with its fluid curves and contours, reflects the natural world, while the Atrio outdoor shower extends the sensory experience into open-air settings, blurring indoor and outdoor boundaries.
Personalization is a significant aspect of the immersive bathroom designs. The GROHE Colors Collection offers a diverse palette of timeless options for individuals to customize their spaces, with customization extending to product categories for coordinated designs. The slim square cover plates of the GROHE Allure Gravity can be interchanged with various materials like glass, mirror, or quartz. Furthermore, the GROHE Icon 3D collection utilizes 3D printing technology to create bespoke forms, allowing for unique metal printing and entirely new concepts for head showers and faucets. This bespoke approach reflects a collaborative interplay between GROHE's design team, project managers, architects, designers, and planners.
GROHE SPA's Milan Design Week 2024 installation transcends mere aesthetics, aiming to provide designers, architects, and creative enthusiasts with a fresh perspective on bathroom design that prioritizes experience and regeneration. Patrick Speck notes a shift in consumer demand towards quality experiences over material possessions. The installation demonstrates how design can elevate human experience and create genuinely healthy spaces through the thoughtful integration of nature and architecture, embodying the brand's commitment to 'health through water'.
