I’m obsessed with mermaids so transformed my home into an ocean-inspired haven
Bianca Spruit, a 45-year-old woman from Leeds, has meticulously transformed her home into an ocean-inspired sanctuary, a project she embarked on eight years ago due to her profound passion for marine life and scuba diving. Her journey into the underwater world began during a holiday in Ayia Napa in her twenties, where a spontaneous decision to try scuba diving led to an immediate and deep connection with the ocean's tranquility and weightlessness. This initial experience was so impactful that she felt she had found her true home underwater, leading her to pursue further diving certifications upon returning to the UK and eventually becoming a leadership coach and dive instructor.
The inspiration for her home's transformation stemmed from her desire to bring the calm and beauty of the underwater world into her daily life, especially since she couldn't dive as frequently as she wished. Recognizing that her home should reflect all aspects of her personality and passions, she incorporated nautical-themed decor alongside items related to her coaching career. The renovation involved a comprehensive overhaul of her previously outdated home, which featured floral carpets and multiple layers of woodchip wallpaper.
Bianca and her husband, who is a joiner, undertook most of the renovation work themselves to manage costs. Her husband handled structural elements such as woodworking, tiling, plastering, and bricklaying, with Bianca assisting as his laborer. For specialized tasks like electrical and plumbing work, they hired professionals. They also focused on resourcefulness for decor, acquiring bargains from off-season sales and upcycling existing furniture. An example of their creative upcycling includes transforming their daughter’s chest of drawers with under-the-sea wallpaper and shell handles for approximately £50. Bianca also learned glass fusing to create custom ocean-themed pieces for her bathroom.
Throughout the renovation, managing dust and the extended timeline of a DIY project were significant challenges. Bianca adopted a pragmatic approach to budgeting, adding a buffer to her husband’s cost estimates, which ultimately resulted in the project coming in under budget. The decor itself constituted a small portion of the overall budget due to their DIY efforts and creative sourcing.
Bianca emphasizes that the transformation is more than just a home project; it's a source of immense happiness and calm, continually reminding her of her cherished diving experiences and world travels. She advises others considering similar renovations to plan budgets realistically, account for contingencies, and infuse their unique passions into their creative endeavors. The home is an ongoing project, with new marine-inspired elements continually being added as they discover them, mirroring the endless discoveries one makes when observing the ocean intently.
