How the focus on relaxation is making wellness key to bathroom design
The role of the bathroom is significantly evolving from a purely functional space to a sanctuary for relaxation and wellness, a trend highlighted by the 2025 UK Houzz Bathroom Trends Study. This shift is driven by a growing consumer desire to transform their bathrooms into spa-like environments, with nearly half of respondents in the study indicating they use their bathrooms for relaxation. This change in perception has led to increased demand for products that offer wellness benefits, premium performance, and luxurious finishes.
Industry experts corroborate this trend, with Lewis Neathey from Grohe UK noting a clear move towards integrating wellness features beyond basic functionality. Alvin Biggs of RAK Ceramics UK attributes part of this acceleration to the pandemic, which underscored the importance of self-care and made the bathroom a more significant personal retreat. Yiota Toumba, UK senior designer for the Villeroy & Boch Group, further explains that the rise in wellness products stems from a desire for escapism and self-care in daily life, especially with the increase in remote and hybrid working models. She also emphasizes a growing awareness of health and well-being, leading consumers to seek products that reduce stress and enhance comfort, often aligning wellness with sustainability through environmentally friendly options.
Ruth Davies from VitrA supports this perspective, clarifying that modern wellness bathrooms are less about superficial luxury and more about enhancing well-being through intentional, sensory design. The integration of smart technology with calming aesthetics is crucial for creating restorative and personalized bathroom spaces. Cleanliness also plays a vital role in promoting relaxation, with 78% of Houzz study respondents identifying it as a key factor.
Several product categories are at the forefront of this wellness trend. Freestanding baths are considered the epitome of indulgence and self-care, with double-ended options providing shared relaxation experiences, as noted by Tanna Molyneux of Bathrooms to Love by PJH. Showering experiences are also becoming central, with BagnoDesign's brand manager Kelly Olsen highlighting that elaborate showers are now as important as baths for cultivating a spa-like atmosphere. Lewis Neathey adds that mid-market consumers prefer oversized showerheads with multiple spray patterns, while premium offerings include ceiling-mounted showers with wall jets, lighting, sound, and steam, all controllable via advanced interfaces.
Innovation in technology is continuously shaping the wellness bathroom. VitrA’s Davies observes a rising appeal for shower toilets due to their enhanced hygiene and smart features. Villeroy & Boch Group’s Toumba envisions a future where bathrooms are smarter and more intuitive, offering personalized controls and soothing designs that cater to both mind and body. She also reiterates the importance of sustainable materials and water-saving features, allowing consumers to enjoy these comforts responsibly. This comprehensive approach ensures the bathroom evolves into a true sanctuary where technology, nature, and relaxation converge to support holistic well-being.
