Everyone’s Using Their Front Yard as a Bonus Backyard in 2024
The concept of utilizing front yards as additional living and social spaces, dubbed “social front yards” by Yardzen in 2021, continues to gain popularity. This trend reflects a desire for homeowners to reconnect with their communities and neighbors by creating inviting outdoor areas visible from the street. Beyond simple mingling, front yards are being transformed for diverse purposes, including edible gardens and extended dining areas, often at the expense of traditional driveways. However, the most prevalent projects focus on creating comfortable lounging spaces for relaxation and observation.
Several design strategies exemplify this trend. For homes with limited outdoor space, maximizing every square foot is crucial. In a San Clemente, California, home, landscape designer Molly Wood created a private, courtyard-like front yard by incorporating a tall fence and a field-grown olive tree for shade, complemented by lounge chairs positioned to enjoy the sunset. Adjacent to the front door, a deck with a gas firepit, custom-made by a local concrete artisan, provides a cozy gathering spot, with its wide edge designed for resting feet.
Another approach involves minimizing maintenance while maximizing comfort. Instead of a traditional, high-maintenance lawn, homeowners are opting for a combination of hardscaping, such as decomposed granite and small wood decks, alongside low-maintenance greenery. For warmer climates, sun-loving grasses like Zoysia Tenuifolia, as used by Fredrickson Landscape Inc. in Oceanside, California, eliminate the need for frequent mowing, allowing homeowners more time to enjoy their outdoor spaces. When transforming a front yard, it's also important to consider the facade's appearance. Designer Alykhan Velji revitalized a mid-century home's exterior by painting the red brick white and covering other sections with recycled plastic slats that mimic walnut wood, enhancing the overall curb appeal.
To create a sense of seclusion without extensive fencing, low-slung sectionals are an effective solution. Photographer Elizabeth Messina’s front yard, for example, features Article’s Lubek Beach Stand low-corner sectional, which provides a tucked-away feel even in an unfenced area. For more defined zones, stucco partitions can create distinct “rooms” within the front yard. One homeowner in Tempe, Arizona, transformed a barren gravel space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing area by laying brick pavers and strategically placing unobtrusive stucco walls, resulting in both a dining/firepit area and a private reading nook. These examples collectively illustrate the growing trend of reimagining front yards as versatile, comfortable, and inviting extensions of the home's living space, fostering community connection and personal relaxation.
