Designer Annsley McAleer Transforms an Extra Room Into a Private Bar
Interior designer Annsley McAleer undertook the task of updating an Osterville summer home for a family of four, with the primary goal of creating a functional space capable of accommodating a frequent influx of guests. The house, situated in Cape Cod, is described as a hub of activity, necessitating an aesthetic that was simultaneously airy, fun, and simple. A key element of McAleer's design strategy involved converting an existing extra room, located adjacent to the kitchen and family room, into a sophisticated bar area. This transformation aimed to enhance the home's entertainment capabilities and provide a dedicated space for social gatherings.
During the design process, a point of discussion arose regarding the color palette. While the homeowners generally favored a greener scheme, the husband expressed a strong preference for navy grasscloth. McAleer incorporated this desire into the bar space by utilizing a textured Phillip Jeffries wallcovering. The design also included custom marble-topped cabinets that were carefully selected to match the existing cabinetry in the adjoining kitchen, ensuring a cohesive flow between the spaces. Industrial shelves, custom-fabricated by Rhode Island-based Palmer Industries, were installed to display the family's diverse collection of glassware, adding both functionality and a decorative element to the bar.
Further enhancing the bar's aesthetic and utility, brass sconces and hardware were incorporated, providing warm accents and contributing to the overall design. For the furniture, the space features a pair of Chelsea Textiles chairs, which were sourced from India and required a significant shipping period. These chairs are complemented by a Made Goods "Jada" coffee table, crafted from hand-laid banana bark, forming an ideal setting for entertaining. McAleer highlighted the room's multifunctional nature, noting its game table and chairs, as well as its direct access to the pool area. This design allows the space to serve various purposes, from a relaxed spot for cocktails with friends to a casual area for playing cards.
The project underscores the importance of thoughtful interior design in creating spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional, especially in homes that regularly host visitors. McAleer's approach balanced the clients' preferences with practical considerations, resulting in a stylish and versatile bar area that seamlessly integrates with the rest of the summer home. The transformation effectively optimized an underutilized room into a central gathering point, enhancing the home's capacity for seasonal entertaining and providing a comfortable, elegant environment for both family and guests.
