Can coffee really work for cleaning? Cleaning pros advise

This article explores the effectiveness of using coffee grounds as an all-natural cleaning solution for various household tasks, drawing on insights from professional cleaners. In an era emphasizing sustainability and repurposing common items, coffee grounds offer an eco-friendly alternative to chemical cleaners, not just for gardening but also for indoor applications. One primary use for coffee grounds is in scrubbing pans. Cleaning expert Karina Toner, operations manager at Spekless, highlights their utility as a natural degreaser. By mixing two to three teaspoons of coffee grounds with warm, soapy water, and using a soft sponge, individuals can effectively scrub away stuck-on food. The mild abrasiveness of coffee grounds helps in this process without requiring harsh chemicals. However, it is noted that this method, while effective, might not surpass the efficacy of traditional baking soda and vinegar for heavily burnt pots and pans. Coffee grounds are also highly effective in neutralizing unpleasant odors in the kitchen and other areas of the home. Mimi Nguyen, founder of Cafely, suggests placing small bowls of used coffee grounds in refrigerators, freezers, closets, or drawers to absorb unwanted smells. For aesthetic integration, using a small, decorative bowl is recommended. It is crucial to ensure the coffee grounds are thoroughly dry before placement to prevent mold and mildew growth. This odor-neutralizing property also extends to deodorizing fridges when combined with salt, functioning similarly to the baking soda hack for closets. For cleaning surfaces, coffee grounds can be used to tackle stubborn stains on kitchen tiles and tile floors. A mixture of coffee grounds and soapy water, applied with a soft sponge or cloth, can help lift grease from stovetops or counters. However, a significant caveat emphasized by Karina is to avoid using coffee grounds on porous or easily scratched materials, such as natural stones like marble, due to their abrasive nature. Furthermore, coffee grounds can be employed to clean wooden furniture and diminish the appearance of scratches on wood surfaces, including countertops and dining tables. This method involves applying moist coffee grounds to the scratched area, allowing them to sit for 5-10 minutes, and then buffing them away with a cotton rag. After the area dries, a clear wood sealant can be applied. While this technique does not remove scratches, it acts as a natural stain, darkening the wood and making the marks less noticeable. This is particularly useful for thrifted vintage furniture. However, it is less effective on light-colored wood, where professional staining or sanding and resealing might be more appropriate. It is also advised against pouring coffee grounds down the sink or garbage disposal, as larger quantities can lead to clogged pipes. Instead, composting or incorporating them into houseplant soil is recommended due to their beneficial nutrient content for plants. #CoffeeGrounds #NaturalCleaning #SustainableLiving #KitchenCleaning #OdorNeutralization #FurnitureCare #EcoFriendly #HomeMaintenance #DIYCleaning #CoffeeGrounds #NaturalCleaning #SustainableLiving #KitchenCleaning #OdorNeutralization #FurnitureCare #EcoFriendly #HomeMaintenance #DIYCleaning
