Before and after: A red brick fireplace gets a $250 modern makeover
This article details a DIY fireplace renovation undertaken by an Australian mother, Krystel, who transformed her outdated red brick fireplace into a modern, industrial-style focal point for just $250. Having moved to a coastal area 16 months prior, Krystel sought to personalize her new home, which possessed a unique character but featured a red brick fireplace that did not align with her preferred aesthetic. The renovation was inspired by a desire to update the fireplace during lockdown and reflect her love for industrial style, raw finishes, and natural timbers. Krystel, an experienced DIY enthusiast who previously converted a three-car garage into a granny flat, aimed to make the gas fireplace the center of the room.
The renovation process spanned 14 days, including a week for wax curing. Krystel acquired all necessary materials from a local Bunnings store, spending a total of $250. The supplies included an Ozito Electric sander ($59.98), Diablo sandpaper sheets ($25.80 for two packs), two liters of British Paints 4 in 1 prep ($45.70), old cotton rags, two Renovator’s paintbrushes ($18.10), Feast Watson soft wax ($17.90), Rust-Oleum Milk paint finish in Eclipse ($45.39), and a ladder. The most challenging aspect of the project was the sanding process, which Krystel undertook three times to achieve the desired level of exposed red brick after painting.
The step-by-step renovation involved cleaning the brick, applying a single coat of British Paints 4 in 1 prep with a large paintbrush, and then sanding with a 40-grit electric sander once dry. The mantle was lightly sanded, followed by three layers of Rust-Oleum Milk paint finish in Eclipse, with light sanding (240-grit) between coats. The brick at the bottom was also painted with the milk paint to create an open fireplace effect. After drying for 24 hours, Feast Watson soft wax was applied, and it was left to cure for seven days before styling. The project's most gratifying outcome was the significant aesthetic transformation achieved under budget, highlighting the satisfaction of a successful DIY endeavor and the 'wow' factor it brought to the living space. The final look features a black fireplace against a white painted brick wall, accented with decorative pieces and an indoor plant to soften the space.
