How to update a fireplace – 6 ways to refresh this focal point

A fireplace often serves as a central element in a room, and its aesthetic condition significantly influences the overall ambiance of the space. An outdated, unattractive, or uninspired fireplace can detract from a room's appeal, but a complete replacement is not always necessary. This guide provides six expert-backed strategies for updating a fireplace, transforming it from a dated feature into a captivating focal point. One straightforward method for refreshing a fireplace is to paint it. Painting brick, for instance, can drastically alter its appearance. According to realtor Erin Hybart, painting the entire brick surface is a popular choice, especially if bricks are damaged, mismatched, or simply not the desired color. Alternatively, a more nuanced approach involves selectively painting individual bricks to create a less uniform, more expensive-looking finish. When painting any part of an active fireplace, including the mantel, surround, or hearth, using heat-resistant paint is crucial for safety. The type of paint should also be appropriate for the material, and a primer should be applied for durability and cleanliness. Lighter colors may highlight soot and ash more prominently than darker shades, although most stains are typically washable. Another option for revitalization is refitting the fireplace glass. Replacing the glass can enhance energy efficiency and safety, provided it is done correctly. Accurate measurements are essential, accounting for any curves in the glass. It is also important to replace the gasket tape around the glass, which ensures an airtight seal. Beyond the glass, maintaining the cleanliness of the entire fireplace is vital for a polished look. Swapping out tiles on the fireplace surround or hearth offers a significant aesthetic upgrade. Interior designer Artem Kropovinsky suggests using geometric tiles for a modern feel, choosing complex patterns for boldness or plainer designs for subtlety. Before tiling, it is important to be aware of federal and local codes and to select tiles suitable for high temperatures, such as ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, or even specialized glass and metal options. For brick fireplaces, alternative techniques to painting include applying a wash. The German schmear technique involves adding mortar to the brick in an unplanned pattern, creating an old-world, textured, and whitewashed effect. While possible as a DIY project, its permanence often makes professional application preferable. A simpler alternative is whitewashing, which uses watered-down water-based paint to create a translucent effect, allowing some of the brick's original color to show through. Limewashing offers a chalkier finish, and while DIY options exist, commercial limewash paints are safer and easier to apply. Incorporating sheets of stone provides a modern update. Lucy Small, founder and lead designer of State and Season, highlights the benefits of thin slate or air slate sheets, which offer the look of real stone slabs at a fraction of the cost and are lightweight and easy to install. Finally, blending old and new elements can create a contemporary twist on traditional fireplace designs. Combining traditional hearth features with modern mantel materials can yield a fresh aesthetic without requiring a complete overhaul. Experimenting with contemporary colors for the mantel and surround can also achieve a modern look. Artem Kropovinsky recommends combining diverse materials like wood and stone to create a tactile and dramatic effect. For the space above the fireplace, a mirror is a classic choice that can make a room feel larger, especially if it is the same width as the mantel or slightly smaller. Alternatively, art can be hung to add color and personalize the space, offering a less formal touch suitable for family rooms. These updates, from simple cosmetic changes to more structural modifications, can significantly enhance a fireplace's appearance and integrate it seamlessly into modern interior design, ensuring it remains a captivating focal point in any home. #FireplaceUpdate #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #LivingRoomDecor #FireplaceMantel #DIYHomeImprovement #TileDesign #ArchitecturalFeatures #FireplaceUpdate #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #LivingRoomDecor #FireplaceMantel #DIYHomeImprovement #TileDesign #ArchitecturalFeatures
