9 fresh ways to try the grandmillennial decor trend

The 'grandmillennial' or 'granny chic' design trend, characterized by old-school maximalist elements like ruffles, tassels, scalloped trims, and chintz, continues to gain significant traction in the interiors world. This trend is interpreted by some as a nostalgic callback to pre-pandemic eras, akin to the 'cottagecore' aesthetic, while others view it as a timeless celebration of traditional patterns and design motifs that possess enduring appeal. Designer Kim Armstrong describes it as an "actual movement" that fosters a curated, collected, and unique look, suggesting that the style evolves organically over time rather than being overtly constructed. To offer contemporary approaches to integrating this retro trend into modern spaces, three designers—Kim Armstrong, Dominique Brielle Fluker, and Mark Lavender—were asked to share their top three grandmillennial-friendly pieces and provide guidance on their incorporation into home decor. Kim Armstrong, known for her bold use of color and pattern, suggests incorporating 1950s Vintage Auffray French Louis XV–Style Walnut Bergère Chairs, emphasizing their patina and shape, and noting that she often reupholsters them while sometimes painting the frame. She also recommends the Modena Floral Summer Fabric by Kim Hoegger Home, praising its classy, timeless prints and fresh colorways, which simplify pattern blending for designers. Additionally, Armstrong advocates for the use of Samuel & Sons' 7-Inch Cotton Tassel Fringe in Natural, highlighting its ability to add movement, texture, and interest to sofas, ottomans, or table skirts, likening it to a 'grandma chic' touch. Dominique Brielle Fluker, who focuses on creating comfortable and effortless spaces with a maximalist yet livable aesthetic, suggests the Dana Gibson Chintz Lumbar Throw Pillow from Perigold. She notes its capacity to enliven neutral-toned furniture without overwhelming a subdued palette. Fluker also recommends the Royal Delft Blue Plate with Flowers by Scully & Scully, valuing its ability to introduce a pop of color and old-school personality to any tablescape. Her third suggestion is 'Flora Block Face' by Sally King Benedict at Chairish, an original mixed media painting that offers a modern twist on a traditional portrait, making it suitable for a living room or foyer. Mark Lavender, recognized for creating timeless interiors with classic decor accents, particularly those inspired by the British Empire aesthetic, proposes the Jeremiah Tribal Lampshade by Vaughan. He points out that pleated fabric lampshades, a popular trend in the UK, can serve as elegant 'jewelry' for lamps. Lavender also highlights the Fruit Minor Fabric in Ivory/Teal by Morris & Co., appreciating its vibrant colors and the way Morris & Co. preserves these legacy patterns with updated colorways, positioning them at the forefront of the trend. Finally, he recommends the X Trestle Coffee Table by Aesthetic. Lavender notes a shift from metal or barnwood casegoods to the warmth of wood furniture, especially pieces painted in lively colors or stained in warm brown tones. He emphasizes the importance of mixing these elements to achieve a collected-over-time look rather than an instantly purchased appearance, contributing to a comfortable aesthetic within the home. #GrandmillennialDecor #GrannyChic #InteriorDesignTrends #TraditionalPatterns #HomeDecor #DesignInspiration #VintageFurniture #TextileDesign #MaximalistDesign #GrandmillennialDecor #GrannyChic #InteriorDesignTrends #TraditionalPatterns #HomeDecor #DesignInspiration #VintageFurniture #TextileDesign #MaximalistDesign
