6 x 18 Slender House / Spaces Architects@ka
The "6 x 18 Slender House" is a private residential project designed for a family of five, located on a compact 6-meter by 18-meter site in Delhi, India. The architects, Spaces Architects@ka, aimed to create a home that is both distinctive within its urban setting and deeply connected to the client's lifestyle. The design prioritizes thoughtful spaces over sheer floor area, addressing the challenges of a narrow plot while maximizing light, ventilation, and a sense of openness.
A central design strategy involved integrating staggered cut-outs and strategically placed skylights throughout the house. These elements are crucial for introducing natural light and airflow into what could otherwise be a confined space, compensating for the limited width of the site. The architectural team embraced the idea of reducing the total built area to achieve a higher quality of living environment, demonstrating a focus on experiential design rather than volumetric expansion.
Key features of the project include a comprehensive approach to lighting and climate control. HVAC engineering was handled by Aermec HVAC Engineering Company, ensuring efficient temperature regulation. Decorative lighting was provided by Emanate Homes, while Architectural Lighting was managed by Sandhya Lights, contributing to the ambiance and functionality of different spaces. Furniture was sourced from IOTA Furniture and Katoosh, reflecting a curated interior aesthetic. The integration of a home automation system by SASCO SMART HOME further enhances the residence's modernity and convenience.
The project details indicate a collaborative effort among various specialists. Concepts Unlimited served as Project Management Consultants, overseeing the execution. Structural engineering was provided by RELIABLE CONSULTING ENGINEERS, ensuring the building's stability and safety. The design team, led by Kapil Aggarwal, included Nishant Tyagi, Aruj Saxena, and Vikrant Dhakrey, with Pankaj Khandelwal as the Project Lead and Arvind as the Site Coordinator. This multi-disciplinary collaboration underscores the complexity and coordinated effort required for such a specialized residential build.
Photographs by Bharat Aggarwal capture the completed residence, highlighting its unique design elements and the interplay of light and shadow within its narrow confines. The project utilizes various construction and finishing materials from manufacturers such as AutoDesk, Chaos Group, Enscape, Tostem India, Charbhuja Stones, Clear Concepts, Delta Faucet, Fan Studio, Holz, Kohler, Norisys, STONELAM, Satvik Marbles, and Trimble Navigation. This selection suggests a commitment to quality and contemporary building practices. Completed in 2024, the 6,500 sq ft house exemplifies how innovative architectural solutions can transform challenging site conditions into livable and aesthetically pleasing urban dwellings, tailored to specific family needs.
