10 common living room design disasters experts warn against falling for

Decorating a living room involves careful consideration to create a harmonious and appealing space. One common pitfall is the "matchy-matchy" look, often resulting from purchasing all furniture and upholstery from the same store. Interior designer Keely Smith from Home Stratosphere suggests a more dynamic approach: mixing different styles, textures, and colors to infuse life into the room. Blending antique and modern pieces can achieve a cohesive yet compelling aesthetic. Emma Deterding, Creative Director of Kelling Designs, emphasizes the importance of planning based on who will use the living room, how it will be used, and its primary functions. This foresight helps in making informed decisions about furniture, decor, and layout. Avoiding certain mistakes can transform a living space into a relaxing and sociable environment. Selecting the wrong-sized sofa is a frequent error. While large corner units might seem practical for seating, they often dominate the space. Deterding recommends using multiple sofas with slimmer arms, such as a three-seater and a two-seater combination, to create a better layout and flow, making the room feel more spacious. This strategy ensures adequate seating without sacrificing visual openness. Inadequate lighting is another critical mistake. Relying solely on a single ceiling pendant misses opportunities to create atmosphere. Deterding advises layering lighting with lamps and subtle downlights to provide appropriate illumination for various tasks and moods. Overly dramatic light fixtures should be avoided unless the ceiling height can accommodate them. Utilizing dimmer controls and strategically placing wall, floor, and table lamps allows for flexible ambiance control. Pushing all furniture against the walls might seem like a way to enlarge a room, but it can make the space feel less inviting and sociable. Laura Rich, an interior design expert at Furniturebox, suggests "floating furniture" by pulling pieces towards the center of the room. This arrangement fosters a more open feel and encourages interaction, creating an intimate setting while paradoxically giving the illusion of more space, especially when anchored by a rug. Choosing an incorrectly sized rug can undermine a living room's design. Daniel Prendergast, design director from The Rug Seller, explains that a rug too small can disrupt the visual balance. Small rugs are suitable for under coffee tables, creating a central point. Medium-sized rugs should be large enough to place the front legs of furniture on them for a polished look. For large area rugs, covering almost the entire floor space, leaving about 18 inches from the perimeter, ensures furniture sits comfortably on it, avoiding a perched appearance. Neglecting window treatments is another common oversight. Unattractive window frames can be disguised using a combination of curtains and Roman blinds. Hanging curtain rails too low or curtains too short can ruin a room's proportions. Yvonne Keal, Senior Product Manager at Hillarys, recommends installing curtain rails several inches above the window frame to enhance height. Specific considerations, like radiators beneath windows, may necessitate alternative curtain lengths or thermal blinds. Over-accessorizing, or "over-cluttering," can detract from a living room's aesthetic. Suzi Samaddar, Room Styling Expert at furn.com, advises editing accessories, selecting a few carefully chosen pieces, and storing the rest. Instead of bulky, mismatched furniture, focusing on a single statement piece complemented by plainer accessories maintains cohesion. When mixing patterns, ensuring color continuity helps maintain a balanced look. Failing to establish a focal point can lead to a cluttered or uninspired room. Nicolene Mausenbaum of Dezyna suggests choosing a visually interesting or functional item, such as artwork, a fireplace, or a window, as the central element. Arranging complementary furniture around this focal point, using a rug to define the area, and strategically employing natural and artificial light can enhance its appeal. Decorative accessories and plants can further augment the focal point. Designing a living room primarily around the television is another mistake. Kate Conrad, Lead Designer at Madison and Mayfair, suggests prioritizing more aesthetically pleasing features and placing the television in a less central but still visible location. Options like disguising the TV or choosing models with discreet designs, such as Samsung's The Frame, can help. Media cabinets with doors can also help conceal screens when not in use. Additionally, poorly hung art, whether too high or too low, can be visually disruptive. Kate Winch of Madison and Mayfair advises hanging artwork between the sofa and ceiling, centered on the sofa's width, for a balanced display. Insufficient storage contributes to disarray, impacting mental well-being. Simon Glanville, Managing Director at A Place for Everything, recommends stylish, compact, and multi-functional storage solutions. Items with dual purposes, like side tables with storage, are practical. Specialized organizers for remotes and toys that blend with the decor prevent clutter without sacrificing style. Choosing the right color scheme is also crucial; overly bright colors can be stressful, while muted ones can be dull. Testing paint samples is essential before committing. While the terms "living room" and "family room" are often used interchangeably, traditionally, a living room is more formal, used for entertaining guests, while a family room is more casual and activity-focused. Many modern homes combine these functions into a single multi-purpose space. #LivingRoomDesign #InteriorDecorating #FurnitureArrangement #HomeLighting #RugPlacement #WindowTreatments #ClutterControl #FocalPoint #SofaSelection #StorageSolutions
