I Sent Living Room Photos to a Designer — Her Changes Made It Better

The author, Stephanie Montes, recounts her experience of transforming her living room with the help of Stefanny Osorio, a designer from Havenly, an online interior design platform. Faced with a narrow living room that felt dark and cluttered, Montes sought professional assistance to create a brighter, more functional, and aesthetically pleasing space. The design process began with Montes providing Osorio with inspiration, room dimensions, and photos of her current living room. Osorio then delivered a 3D rendering of the proposed design, along with product recommendations and links for purchasing items. Montes initially envisioned a moody, dramatic aesthetic but decided to embrace a brighter, more open feel for her family's main gathering space. A key inspiration came from Nancy Meyers' movies, known for their light-filled interiors featuring white slipcovered sofas. This led Montes to acquire an UPPLAND Sofa and loveseat from IKEA, opting for their Blekinge white slipcovers. To enhance comfort and visual appeal, she added throw pillow inserts and covers from Quince. Montes observed that Nancy Meyers' film sets frequently featured numerous lamps, influencing her decision to incorporate more lighting into her living room, placing wooden side tables from HomeGoods next to seating areas. Beyond furniture and lighting, Montes tackled structural changes to elevate the room's character. She considered installing wallpaper but ultimately chose wainscoting for its perceived ease of installation and classic charm. Her husband assisted in installing a 1.5-inch chair rail molding from Lowe's, which was then painted white to match the existing trim, creating a cohesive and sophisticated look. This architectural detail added texture and visual interest to the once-plain walls. The overall transformation resulted in a living room that felt significantly brighter and more inviting, aligning with her desired aesthetic of a chic yet comfortable environment. Montes reflects on her initial complacency with her home's decor, acknowledging that she had become too accustomed to her old, worn-out furniture. She also admits to a fear of her children damaging new and expensive items, which is why she proactively purchased waterproof slipcovers for her new white sofa. Despite her initial reservations about maintaining a pristine white living space with young children, the transformation has been met with positive reception, even from her two and four-year-olds. They have reportedly shown a newfound appreciation for the updated space, taking initiative to tidy their toys and wash their hands before entering the room, suggesting that a well-designed environment can positively influence behavior and foster a sense of care for one's surroundings. #InteriorDesign #LivingRoomMakeover #HomeDecor #InteriorDesigner #HomeTransformation #DIYHomeImprovement #FamilyFriendlyDesign #NancyMeyersInspired #InteriorDesign #LivingRoomMakeover #HomeDecor #InteriorDesigner #HomeTransformation #DIYHomeImprovement #FamilyFriendlyDesign #NancyMeyersInspired
