5 dated kitchen flooring trends to avoid in 2025 – and what experts say you should choose instead

This article highlights five dated kitchen flooring trends to avoid in 2025, offering expert advice on timeless and on-trend alternatives. The importance of flooring in kitchen design is emphasized, noting that it often becomes an afterthought despite its crucial role in grounding the room and unifying the aesthetic. Replacing kitchen flooring is inconvenient, so making an informed decision upfront is essential to avoid quick obsolescence. The first dated trend discussed is glossy or high-shine floor tiles. Experts suggest that these are losing appeal due to their high maintenance and impracticality in a high-traffic area like the kitchen. Instead, matte or textured tile finishes are recommended. These provide a more natural and forgiving surface, aligning with current preferences for country and rustic kitchen styles. Tumbled limestone and stone-effect porcelain are presented as superior alternatives to polished stone. The second trend to avoid is gray kitchen flooring. While gray still has a place in design, a more deliberate approach is required to keep it current. For flooring, however, gray is considered outdated. The preference is shifting towards warmer, cozier palettes, with beiges, medium browns, and dark chocolatey woods expected to dominate. These richer wood tones not only warm up the kitchen but are also considered timeless and versatile, complementing almost any color scheme. Next, the article advises against checkerboard floor tiles in bright colors. Although colorful kitchens remain in style, the method of incorporating vibrant hues is evolving. Brightly colored checkerboard floors are deemed distracting and potentially overwhelming. The recommendation is to use color and pattern in areas that draw the eye upwards, rather than on the floor. Muted tones, pastel palettes, or earthy hues are suggested for flooring. For a classic look, black and white or neutral gray and beige checkerboard patterns are preferable. Simple wood flooring layouts constitute the fourth outdated trend. Standard linear arrangements of wooden floor panels are being replaced by more intricate and interesting designs. The article points to the rise of patterns like herringbone and chevron, and anticipates a further evolution towards Parquet de Versailles-style patterns in 2025. These modern geometric patterns, especially when paired with warm, rustic wood, create a balance of past and present that is both elevated and timeless. Finally, using separate flooring in an open-plan kitchen/living space is identified as a dated practice. Open-plan layouts are popular for fostering social interaction, but differing flooring types in each 'zone' can disrupt visual flow. A consistent flooring option throughout the open-plan area is recommended to create a cohesive look and the illusion of greater space. This approach also simplifies cleaning. Wood is a popular choice for this, but appropriate tiles can also work effectively, with rugs and decor used to add warmth and character. #KitchenDesign #KitchenFlooring #HomeDecorTrends #InteriorDesign #FlooringMaterials #TileTrends #WoodFlooring #OpenPlanKitchen #DesignTips #KitchenDesign #KitchenFlooring #HomeDecorTrends #InteriorDesign #FlooringMaterials #TileTrends #WoodFlooring #OpenPlanKitchen #DesignTips
