Which Color is Sexy, Daring, and “a Craze” Right Now? An Expert Fills Us In

The article explores the current trend of using blue in kitchen design, highlighting its versatility and appeal. According to color consultant Amy Wax, blue is experiencing a significant surge in popularity, often described as a "craze." This trend is attributed to blue's classic nature, which allows it to complement various decor styles while also offering a bold and exciting aesthetic. Blue can evoke a range of moods, from moody and mystic to ethereal and calming. In kitchen design, blue is being adopted for both cabinets and walls, in shades ranging from dark navies to lighter, dusty tones. Wax emphasizes that incorporating blue kitchen cabinets is not a significant design risk because of its classic appeal, meaning it doesn't necessitate redecorating the entire space to match. She suggests that homeowners should choose shades of blue that resonate with them personally, given the kitchen's role as a creative and familial hub. The current blue trends fall into two main categories: deep navies and dusty blues. Deep navy is likened to "black with a personality," offering an elegant and chic feel. Dusty, cottage-style blues, distinct from baby blues, provide a discerning beauty and lightness to a room. Both camps of blue are gaining traction in contemporary interior design. While white and gray often dominate kitchen color palettes, blue is presented as a classic and complementary alternative. It pairs well with various hardware finishes; navy, for instance, complements brushed brass beautifully, while lighter dusty blues work with all metal fixtures, including nickel, brushed brass, and matte black. Wax advises a layered approach when using blue to avoid oversaturation. For kitchens with numerous cabinets, a common recommendation is to paint the upper cabinets white and the lower ones blue, creating visual balance and preventing the space from feeling overwhelmed by a single color. The article also provides specific recommendations for six blue paint colors, categorized into darker and lighter shades. For darker blues, Benjamin Moore Newburyport Blue, Backdrop School Blazer Blue, and Sherwin Williams – Naval are suggested. Newburyport Blue is a navy shade that pairs well with etched brass. Backdrop School Blazer Blue is described as a versatile blue, hinting at navy, dusty, and midnight sky tones. Sherwin Williams – Naval is a rich, dark blue ideal for the top portion of cabinets. For lighter blues, Benjamin Moore Buxton Blue, Farrow & Ball St. Giles Blue, and Sherwin Williams Dutch Tile Blue are recommended. Buxton Blue is a cooling, ocean-like hue. St. Giles Blue is a vivid mid-tone blue that can add a bold touch. Dutch Tile Blue is a soft, cottage-y blue suitable for cabinets or accent walls. #InteriorDesign #KitchenDesign #BlueCabinets #ColorTrends #PaintColors #HomeDecor #ExpertAdvice #InteriorDesign #KitchenDesign #BlueCabinets #ColorTrends #PaintColors #HomeDecor #ExpertAdvice
