Clever Built-Ins Hide All the Clutter in This Basement Laundry Room
Alexandra Bennett, co-founder and CEO of the textile brand Louise Gray, transformed her unfinished and 'spooky' basement laundry room into an organized and functional space with the help of designer Victoria Sass of Prospect Refuge Studio. Bennett, who is passionate about fabric care, sought a laundry room that was not only efficient but also enjoyable to spend time in. The original basement lacked adequate storage, counter space, organizational strategy, and proper lighting, prompting a comprehensive renovation.
The redesign focused on maximizing utility and tidiness while incorporating elements that aligned with Bennett's modern lifestyle and appreciation for textiles. Key material choices included white oak flooring, selected for its durability and modern rift-sawn appearance, which offers a clean, linear grain. For the countertops, Marine Black Slate was chosen, a natural stone material praised by Sass for its aesthetic appeal, similar to Pietra Gris marble, without the common issues of etching, scratching, or the need for oiling associated with soapstone. This material also presented a cost-effective alternative to other natural stones, providing the robust qualities of engineered quartz with the beauty of real stone.
The renovation incorporated several clever built-in features to conceal clutter and enhance functionality. A wall-mounted drying rack was installed, replacing two standard drying racks that previously occupied significant floor space. This solution supports Bennett's preference for air-drying textiles to extend their lifespan and reduce environmental impact. Another innovative addition is a dedicated roll-in compartment designed specifically to hide the vacuum cleaner, addressing the mental clutter often caused by visible household items.
Furthermore, the design includes a miniature ironing board cleverly concealed within an armoire. This feature caters to Bennett's casual dress code, eliminating the need for a bulky full-size ironing board and offering a practical, space-saving solution. This hidden ironing board also pays homage to traditional designs where such utility items were integrated seamlessly into living spaces.
The project successfully transformed the laundry room into a celebrated and efficient workspace. Bennett expressed that doing laundry, which she finds therapeutic, is now a more enjoyable experience in a space that provides everything needed without unnecessary additions. The collaboration between Bennett and Sass resulted in a highly customized and functional laundry room that effectively hides clutter and streamlines daily chores, making it a favorite spot in the house.
