This $1.2M California Midcentury House Looks Like It Came Straight Out of “Mad Men”
A midcentury modern home in Glendale, California, designed by architect Gus Stamos in 1968 for his family, has recently been listed for $1.198 million. This marks only the second time the property has been available for sale since its original construction. The house, situated on a winding dirt road in Chevy Chase Canyon, offers a retro-style interior that has largely been preserved over the decades.
The current owners, who acquired the home in 2002, have maintained most of the original finishes and design elements that characterize its 1960s aesthetic. Their modifications were minimal, primarily involving the replacement of flooring and the painting of some concrete block walls. The residence spans nearly 2,500 square feet and is located on a 0.28-acre lot, providing a sense of privacy despite its proximity to central Glendale and Eagle Rock.
Inside, the home features distinct architectural details including tongue-and-groove ceilings, original cabinetry, and Formica countertops. Wood-paneled walls are integrated throughout, some of which are clad with cabinet doors salvaged from a stereo manufacturing company where Stamos's wife, Sophie, once worked. The upper level of the house contains the main living and dining areas, a kitchen, and a laundry area. A corner fireplace serves as a divider between the living and dining spaces, both of which offer direct access to a covered balcony that overlooks the canyon.
The lower level of the home follows a split-level floor plan, accommodating three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and a family room. Multiple areas of the house, including the family room and the principal bedroom, provide access to a lower-level deck. The family room also features a fireplace, additional wood paneling, and a large sliding glass door that opens onto this deck. One of the bathrooms has been updated with mosaic floor tiles and a painted concrete block wall behind the vanity, while another bedroom features original concrete block walls painted in a bright magenta by the current owners.
Beyond its preserved vintage interior, the property has been updated with new solar panels and some modern utilities. The spacious lower-level deck extends along nearly the entire width of the home, leading to the sloping lot. The listing is handled by Jacqueline Tager of Sotheby's International Realty.
