Meditation Space at Home: 4 Ideal Spots to Block Out the World
Creating a dedicated meditation space at home can significantly contribute to reducing stress, decreasing anxiety, and even lowering blood pressure. Gayatri Devi, a yoga and meditation teacher and founder of the YaMM Yoga Festival, emphasizes that feeling safe and comfortable in one's own home is fundamental to establishing a successful meditation practice. She advises preparing any chosen space by decluttering it, as visual distractions can hinder inward focus. The sensory experience is also crucial, with suggestions to incorporate calming scents such as incense, palo santo, or sage to purify the air and aid concentration. Furthermore, the color palette of the meditation area plays a role, with soft hues like certain pinks, lilacs, and dusky light blues promoting relaxation. Above all, a distraction-free environment is paramount, requiring the user to switch off electronic devices, air out the room, and ensure no interruptions from people or pets.
Several locations within the home can be adapted for meditation. The bedroom is often an ideal spot because the nervous system associates it with safety, which can activate serenity-inducing hormones during deep meditation. Individuals can choose to sit in a lotus position at the foot of the bed, use a small chair for back support, or comfortably sit on the bed with pillows. For those who enjoy the outdoors, a garden or backyard provides an excellent setting. Meditating in nature allows individuals to utilize natural scents, colors, and sounds as 'portals' to deepen their meditative experience and enhance their connection with the universe. Even a small terrace or garden can suffice, provided there is a comfortable spot to sit or lie down, with the added benefit of grounding by going barefoot on the grass.
The bathroom, particularly with a bathtub, offers a unique opportunity for aquatic meditation. Devi suggests adjusting the water temperature to be lukewarm and dimming the lights or lighting a candle to create a serene ambiance. Meditating in the bathtub can help in detaching from sensory stimuli related to weight, allowing a focus on the body's movement and fluidity. Finally, for those desiring a permanent and exclusive meditation area, a dedicated nook or alcove is highly recommended. This space can be adorned with a small table, comfortable cushions, and meditative tools such as crystals, candles with grounding scents like cypress and vetiver, or a calming picture, fostering an environment solely purposed for mindfulness and inner peace.
