Whitney Kenter finds Zen in a remodeled Midcentury ranch

Whitney Kenter's remodeled 1950s brick ranch in Glendale has transformed into a serene sanctuary, a process initiated in January 2019 following her purchase of the home in November 2018. Collaborating with interior designer Annie Brahler of Euro Trash, Kenter embarked on a complete remodel and addition, aiming to create a space that truly reflected her personality and provided both gathering and private areas for her and her three children. This project was particularly significant for Kenter, as her previous new-construction home did not align with her personal style, highlighting the importance of this remodel in shaping her ideal living environment. The home search itself was challenging, with Kenter initially doubting she would find a suitable property in the desired Kirkwood/Glendale area that met her criteria for a large, secluded, nature-surrounded lot on a hill. Her discovery of the Midcentury brick house online, situated on an acre with a creek and surrounded by woods, proved to be an ideal find. Brahler played a crucial role in envisioning the renovation and addition, ensuring that the new elements seamlessly integrated with the existing structure. Working with NJL Custom Homes and MooreHouse Development, the renovation focused on expanding the home's footprint rather than building upwards. A key design feature is a two-story glass staircase that leads to a new lower level, allowing for 10-foot ceilings and an outdoor courtyard. The interior of the original house saw significant changes, including the removal of internal walls and drop ceilings to create vaulted ceilings. A new wall of windows in the combined living and dining areas offers views of the surrounding woods and a new deck, effectively merging indoor and outdoor spaces and increasing the home's square footage from 1,780 to 5,600. Brahler's design philosophy for the home blended rustic elements with glamour, a style Kenter describes as her "earthy hippie vibe" combined with "classy, simple Audrey Hepburn style." Kenter's commitment to sustainability was a driving factor in material selection, leading to the incorporation of reclaimed lumber for carpentry surfaces, herringbone wood floors by Willow Architectural Salvage, and custom kitchen cabinetry and a range hood by Woodhaven Woodworks. Even the kitchen's main appliances were salvaged and refurbished, aligning with Kenter's desire to minimize landfill waste and appreciate the longevity of relevant items. The kitchen, a central hub, features an oversized island topped with Imperial Danby marble and a waterfall edge, designed for both cooking and family activities. Reclaimed floating wood shelves by MooreHouse are set against a brass wall, a material also used for the living room's statement fireplace. This use of brass was an innovative choice by Brahler, adding a glamorous yet natural touch. The living room's conversation pit, with an elegantly curved sofa and a unique coffee table, complements the neutral color palette. Deep emerald green accents, symbolizing the outdoors, are woven throughout the house, appearing in velvet kitchen barstools and the main bedroom's upholstered bed. The main bedroom suite includes a serene bathroom with a freestanding Aqua Eden tub and a separate shower, featuring white matte beveled tile. The home office, essential for Kenter's consulting work, is adorned with a mural of trees and birds, layered with unique decorative items like a taxidermy peacock and a vintage lioness table lamp, alongside custom leopard print armchairs. The outdoor spaces received equal attention, with raised beds and crushed oyster shells in the garden. Kenter expressed immense satisfaction with the remodel, emphasizing the positive outcome of trusting her designer's expertise and creative vision. #HomeDesign #MidcenturyRanch #HomeRemodel #InteriorDesign #SustainableLiving #GlendaleHome #AnnieBrahler #EuroTrash #ReclaimedMaterials #HomeDesign #MidcenturyRanch #HomeRemodel #InteriorDesign #SustainableLiving #GlendaleHome #AnnieBrahler #EuroTrash #ReclaimedMaterials
