Travertine, brass and light oak: a Zen retreat in the heart of Macau
A Hong Kong family sought a tranquil retreat in Macau, finding an ideal 3,500 sq ft apartment with a golf club view, which served as the primary selling point over the nearby Cotai Strip. The apartment, completed in 2019, required bespoke interior customization to meet the family's sophisticated taste. Designer Max Lam Tsz-hong was tasked with transforming the four-bedroom flat into a luxurious and comfortable holiday home. His vision for the space was an “elegant Zen” environment, where every element, from structural surfaces to furnishings and lighting, was meticulously considered and designed.
Lam's approach focused on incorporating high-quality materials and refined pairings to achieve a sense of understated luxury. In the dining area, a prominent Calacatta gold marble wall creates a bold focal point, complemented by brass display cabinets. The adjacent living room features a curved travertine niche and a wall of light oak cabinetry, which cleverly hides a television behind sliding panels. To ensure coherence between the split-level dining and living areas, Lam implemented a consistent design language. This included curved, concave false ceilings with concealed lighting, a marble tread on the connecting step, and repeated brass accents throughout both spaces, creating a harmonious and unified aesthetic. The apartment's design emphasizes both grandeur and subtle functionality, catering to a family that appreciates fine details and a serene atmosphere away from the bustling city.
