These stone objects blend Mallorcan craft traditions with bold brutalism
Seven Studio, founded by artist Diego Sánchez Barceló and art director Alex Robertson Dunlop, has carved a unique niche in the design world by blending traditional Mallorcan stone carving with a brutalist aesthetic. The duo relocated to Mallorca, drawn by its rich craft history, which profoundly influences their work. Their atelier, located within their home, serves as the creative hub for a diverse range of objects, from sculptures and homeware to collectible stone furniture and large-scale commissioned artworks for both public and private spaces. Each piece is meticulously hand-carved from locally sourced stone, embodying a connection to the island's natural materials and heritage.
Key pieces from Seven Studio exemplify their signature style. The 'Brutal' stool showcases visible dents and tool marks, giving it a raw, primal quality that highlights the hand-carving process. The 'Stone Glass Moment' glass series integrates natural sea stones, blurring the lines between art and functionality. Similarly, the 'Lit Stone' lighter case is crafted from hand-carved limestone and sandstone, further illustrating their commitment to raw, natural materials. Their work extends to commissioned projects, including tables made from pink Portuguese marble and stone signage for Hotel Corazón in Mallorca, with designs often mirroring the rugged contours of the Tramuntana mountains. They also collaborated with Tatjana von Stein’s Club Làlia in Palma to produce the ‘Emotional’ bench, crafted from Felanitx marés, a local Mallorcan sandstone.
The distinct backgrounds of the founders contribute significantly to Seven Studio’s unique creative synergy. Alex Robertson Dunlop, hailing from Australia, honed her artistic vision in the fashion industry, working with prominent figures like US Vogue editor Camilla Nickerson and spending over a decade with Dries Van Noten, where she was involved in more than 40 runway shows. Her passion for print and physical media culminated in a self-published photo book, which ultimately inspired the creation of Seven Studio. Diego Sánchez Barceló, after 15 years in digital visuals, returned to Mallorca to reconnect with his roots and the hand-carving tradition passed down by his father. His expertise in integrating precise digital design methods with the raw materiality of hand-carved stone is fundamental to the studio’s modern-meets-traditional ethos.
This fusion of heritage and contemporary creativity is at the core of Seven Studio’s tactile works. Rooted deeply in Mallorca’s rich traditions, their pieces boldly push artistic boundaries, creating designs that are both timeless and strikingly modern. The studio’s commitment to locally sourced materials and traditional craftsmanship, combined with a contemporary brutalist edge, results in unique and compelling objects that resonate with both art and design enthusiasts.
