NArchitekTURA Distills the Nature of Katsushika Hokusai for an Exhibition of His Prints at the National Museum in Krakow
The exhibition "Hokusai. Passages…" at the National Museum in Krakow features woodblock prints by Katsushika Hokusai, known for their evocative stylization of the natural environment, influencing generations of artists. NArchitekTURA conceived the 6,000-square-foot exhibition as a series of four stone gardens. These gardens are set within rooms defined by golden display walls and predominantly black paint, with a central room notable for its satin navy expanses, referencing the deep sea blues found in many of Hokusai's masterpieces. Bartosz Haduch, founder and owner of NArchitekTURA, emphasizes the interactive nature of exhibition architecture with the art it presents.
The design incorporates elements that promote tranquility and contemplation, akin to the stone gardens found in Kyoto temples. The strategic placement of these elements within the museum rooms serves as a distinctive and surprising feature for visitors. Wall texts draw inspiration from traditional Japanese noren fabric dividers, while screens are adorned with silver varnish, a nod to Japanese techniques such as fuki bokashi and maki-e plating. Central to the exhibition's appeal are the interactions between selected boulders and the beloved depictions in Hokusai's works, including "The Great Wave off Kanagawa."
Haduch explains that the shapes, colors, and textures of the chosen boulders indirectly relate to the artworks. These boulders are temporary additions, borrowed specifically for the exhibition's duration and slated to return to decorate new gardens once the exhibition concludes in December. This temporary integration allows Hokusai's artistic interpretation of nature to briefly re-enter the physical natural world. The exhibition design effectively bridges historical Japanese art with contemporary architectural interpretation, creating an immersive experience that respects and enhances the original masterpieces.
The deliberate choices in color palette, materials, and spatial arrangements aim to transport visitors into Hokusai's artistic universe. The golden display walls provide a rich backdrop, contrasting with the dark and navy tones that evoke the natural elements frequently depicted in Hokusai’s prints. This meticulous approach ensures that every detail of the exhibition design contributes to a deeper appreciation and understanding of Hokusai's profound impact on art and his unique engagement with the natural world.
