This 2,500-square-foot South Mumbai home speaks European and lives luxury
This blog post explores the design philosophy behind Maison Doré, a 2,500-square-foot, four-bedroom apartment in Tardeo, South Mumbai, conceptualized by Smit Shah Innovative Designs (SSID). The residence aims to redefine luxury through meticulous attention to detail, restraint, proportion, and craftsmanship, blending European aesthetics with a craft-led approach.
The core of the home's design is an orchestrated palette featuring natural stone, Bolivar Beige veneers, marble inlay work, and subtle gold accents. These elements are strategically used to create flexible spaces and highlight the tactile qualities of surfaces. The materials and forms transition naturally, ensuring the spaces flow seamlessly without appearing artificial or overly designed.
In the living area, natural stone surfaces are balanced with Bolivar Beige veneer panels that extend across architectural features, ensuring visual continuity. The furniture comprises a mix of Italian and custom-made pieces, complemented by bespoke lighting, curated textiles, and unique artworks developed in collaboration with Indian artisans. The combination of upholstered forms, carefully selected textiles, and innovative lighting installations maintains a cohesive design language. Shadows and tailored soft furnishings contribute to a sense of discipline, embodying a sophisticated definition of luxury.
The dining area, while compact, features fabric-based wall installations and gold-toned consoles. A notable design element is the signature pop-up bar, which acts as a quiet disruptor in the home. When closed, it integrates seamlessly with its surroundings, but when open, it transforms the space into a more dynamic and indulgent setting. The kitchen incorporates a blend of ceramic tile and acrylic finishes, adding texture and contrast to the shutters.
Beyond the interiors, a generously sized private deck serves as an extension of the living space, carrying the home’s material language outdoors. Designed for both morning serenity and evening relaxation, it facilitates unhurried conversations and moments of unwinding. The bedrooms maintain the overall cohesive narrative while each featuring custom elements. Fabric-based wall art and jute wallpapers add depth and tactile interest. The material palette remains consistent yet evolves across different rooms, avoiding repetition.
The bathrooms are designed as small discoveries, each offering unique elements. Features like delicate marble inlays and playful mirrors transform routine spaces into colorful and engaging experiences. Each bathroom asserts its own character while aligning with the broader design narrative of the home. The pervasive use of marble inlay work and bespoke metal accents in soft gold highlights the craftsmanship. These details are integral to the architectural framework, tracing edges and trims that respond to changing light conditions.
Maison Doré prioritizes expressive intent and precision over mere material richness. The design resists fleeting trends, opting for aesthetic and material longevity. Organic stones, custom furniture, and hand-finished veneers are chosen for their ability to age gracefully. This philosophy extends to sustainability, emphasizing durability, craftsmanship, and local artistry, thereby subtly reducing the home's environmental footprint. The residence is a reflection of the homeowners' aspirations—luxurious yet understated, and intimate despite its scale, designed to foster well-being amidst daily life. It embodies SSID’s ethos, defining luxury as thoughtful editing and careful translation of intangible desires into tangible forms, creating a timeless home in a bustling city.
