Retro revival: Mark Janson’s 1960s weekend home gets a modern twist
Mark Janson, a partner at the architecture and design firm Janson Goldstein, has completed a personal project: the renovation of his 1960s weekend home in Stanford, New York. Janson, who previously worked with architect Steven Holl and is known for designing commercial spaces like Holt Renfrew’s Vancouver flagship, purchased the 2,000 sq ft midcentury modern house in 2008. The home, built in 1965 by a member of the Cooper Union, stood out to Janson due to its architectural style, which is rare for the region. He was particularly drawn to its design, which emphasized views of the landscape from the interior, a significant contrast to the historic homes with small windows common in the area.
Janson’s vision for the renovation was to restore the home's retro character while integrating modern elements. He describes the exposed structure as similar to a California ranch, providing the house with its distinct character. To enhance the interior flow, visual connections, and air circulation, he removed some walls and added new windows. The renovation process began in 2009, with the landscaping completed within the last year, transforming the property into a private oasis.
The home features six rooms, furnished with vintage pieces from renowned designers such as Florence Knoll and Eero Saarinen. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer expansive views of the property’s seven-acre private park. This outdoor space includes gravel drives, a barn, a swimming pool, a shade garden, and a four-acre meadow. Janson personally oversaw the planting of 300 trees and shrubs to cultivate the private, serene environment. The central kitchen and dining area is highlighted as Janson's favorite part of the home. This space boasts two full glass exposures and a wood-burning stove, serving as a gathering point for residents and guests.
Overall, the project exemplifies a thoughtful blend of preservation and modernization. Janson successfully maintained the essence of the midcentury design while updating it to suit contemporary living and maximizing its connection to the surrounding natural environment. The renovation reflects Janson’s expertise in design, creating a unique and comfortable retreat that honors its historical roots while embracing modern functionality and aesthetics.
