Japanese-inspired furniture line is made from recyclable, colorful fabric

The Italian furniture brand Paola Lenti has collaborated with the Japanese design firm Nendo to create the Hanara-shi series, a collection of furnishings and complements that blends Japanese cultural aesthetics with sustainable design principles. Unveiled at Milan Design Week, the collection draws inspiration from the natural beauty of cherry trees in bloom and the intricate patterns found in ancient samurai armor. This unique fusion results in pieces that are visually striking and functional while adhering to environmentally conscious practices. The Hanara-shi series showcases a range of items, including suspended lamps, baskets, floor lamps, armchairs, and poufs/ottomans. A key innovation in this collection is the use of Maris mesh, a recyclable fabric crafted from 100% polypropylene waterproof material. Unlike traditional furniture design processes that begin with conceptualizing the form, this collection's development was driven by the inherent properties of the fabric itself. The designers explored the possibilities offered by the Maris mesh, allowing its characteristics to dictate the forms and structures of the pieces. The Maris mesh possesses a unique combination of qualities, being rigid yet flexible, malleable, and featuring a marbled, textured appearance. These attributes enabled the designers to fold and wrap the material to construct the various furniture items. While welded elements are incorporated to ensure structural integrity, the primary focus remains on the fabric and its manipulation to create the distinct forms. Furthermore, the collection emphasizes sustainability by incorporating upholstery and inlays made from recovered cutoffs from previous manufacturing processes, minimizing waste and contributing to the eco-friendly nature of the Hanara-shi series. The resulting designs are characterized by their vibrant colors and artistic presentation, initially appearing as sculptural art pieces. However, upon closer inspection, their functional roles as various furniture elements become apparent. The Hanara-shi series represents a thoughtful approach to furniture design, where cultural inspiration, material innovation, and environmental responsibility converge to produce a collection that is both aesthetically pleasing and ecologically sound. This collaboration highlights a growing trend in the design industry towards creating products that not only meet consumer needs but also address broader sustainability concerns. #JapaneseInspired #SustainableDesign #RecyclableFabric #FurnitureDesign #PaolaLenti #Nendo #MilanDesignWeek #EcoFriendlyFurniture #Polypropylene #JapaneseInspired #SustainableDesign #RecyclableFabric #FurnitureDesign #PaolaLenti #Nendo #MilanDesignWeek #EcoFriendlyFurniture #Polypropylene
